I someone was to try out the trial and decide he liked the game, would he have to pay for Vanilla, TBC and WotLK? I kind of think that is the case but since I am not sure and could not find any clear answer googling I thought I'd ask here.

Yes, but he doesn't have to buy them all at once if he doesn't want.

I am aware of that. Thanks for the quick reply.
One more thing, when you upgrade from the trial to full (vanilla) without purchasing a box, do you still get the 30day gametime?

Actually, If he installed the Trial, he has the Full up to date version. you only have to "Buy" the games if you want the boxes and disks.
Blizz lets you buy the serials right in the account area.
But in short, Yes - he will have to pay for the core and x2 expacs.
IMO: I believe this will be a dangerous model for Bliz to continue with, as it wil continue to grow.
Just for fun, lets say there are 3 more Expacs due to be released in the next 4 years.
A new player to wow, or a second account will then consist of the Core and 7 Expac charges?
I know this game is good, but $170 +/- bucks to start playing is a little crazy.
I believe since the new areas are new "lands" you sould just be allowed access to the areas that you have bought the expansions for.
didnt mean to get off topic.

I know you download the full client, I'm just asking if you still get the free 30 day gametime when you go from trial to full and purchase the serial for the core.
Also, how much are the prices to go from trial to full toTBC and then to WotLK? Myself, I have bought the boxes... it's also been a while.
I am getting my brother into the game and he's curious how much of an investment (even though a gradual one) he would have to make.

StumpJumper, you aren't considering things like the Battlechest which greatly reduce start-up costs for new players, or the idea that they will still have to slog through the early content, so there's no need to buy all of the expansions all at once.
I only started playing relatively recently. I bought the Battlechest, leveled to 70, then went out and bought Wrath.
As they introduce more expansions (if they do this), they drop the price of the original content and expand the Battlechest to maintain a reasonable level of accessibility.
dumimare, I'm not positive, but I think when you activate your account, you lose the 30 day trial (I could be wrong though).
You can buy Vanilla and BC in the Battlechest for I think $40. Wrath is another $40.

What 30day trial? I only know of a 14day one.

Wait... I must be confused then. When I signed up we got a 10 day trial. Are they giving free full-content gametime now?

He will get 1 month free. That's only for Vanilla WoW. BC and WotLK don't get free time.

I know that.

yes you do get a free month of game play when you upgrade online. dont need the actual cd's full clients for each game can be downloaded and paid for through the blizz website.
Finally, an answer. Cheers.

Well - i have to say that those prices are a lot different in the US, mate.
19.95 for the core. 19.95 for BC, and I believe WotLK is at 29.95.
All I was saying is, if they dont drop even more, after 7 expacs (6x19.95 and 1x39.95 plus the core 19.95, well... roughly $170. Yes, you get a free month of service, but i am talking about New membrs not retention.
the battel chest is pretty decent, but it's not a "great" savings.
Now - i dont know if we will have 7 expansions, but since we already have 3, and we Know one or two are in the works, then 7 is not an impossible number. makes the max level 130. sounds about right to me.
I know I got my Bro started, and I had to buy all 3 and all he got was 1 free month. it was a costly weekend.

...your brother may or may not like the game...
Oh, he likes the game. He had a lvl 45 troll hunter on my account, when we both lived with our parents. When I moved out he was left without a PC that could run WoW (imagine that) Now I donated my laptop (and got meself a shiny new HP Pavilion). Now we can both play.
1 sec... am I understanding things correctly that you can't upgrade from trial online, with your credit card? Do you really need to go buy a box?
