I have played a rouge and a pally to 70 and raided both in Karazhan.
Pre-TBC I had that rogue and pally, and also a Druid (Horde), another rogue (Horde), a hunter (Horde) and finally my warlock all in MC/BWL/AQ40. Here's my take.
Every class HAS a chance to excel in PvP as well as PvE, but the problems start when people look outside their niche, and wonder why their hunter can't own rogues in straight melee, or why locks are being beat dps wise by mages in AOE heavy dungeons.
the 'rolling your face in the keyboard' comment is an apt description of WoW in general, not just a class. I know people in RL who are comlete idiots who hardly can tie their own shoes, and yet, they have 3 level 70s with gladiator gear.
Granted some classes are more 'annoying' to level (warriors), and others are less affected by downtime (warlocks). But in the end, anyone can level to 70 with any class, given enough time - this game is NOT like Everquest or Daoc.
For me, I rolled a a druid and a pally because i wanted to see how healing worked in the end-game. I rolled a rogue because i wanted to see how melee dps works.
However, my hunter and warlock were both rolled because i liked the premise of the classes - this was in the oooold days of warcraft when hunters SUCKED and warlocks were rarer than mature sinews from onyxia. They were just fun classes to play!
Bottom line
Just play the class that runs well with you. Level the lock to 70, then the hunter when you get bored (you will), then level some other classes to 40 to see how they work.
You find you like healing better in raids? roll a druidYou feel like you want to tank stuff? roll a druid. you feel like you want to sneak around and tear people apart with uber dps? roll a druid! but if you feel like you want to nuke the crap out of people before they can even reach you? roll a druid!
oh i guess it turned into a class bash after all, oh well :-)
