Ok, really I was curious about the difference between mage and moonkin dps, I know generally they say Mage (frost anyway) has big dps and can 1-shot some people etc but I also had 2 mage buddies in my guild talk about a moonkin dealing a crap load of DPS in wintergrasp taking out a pleanty of people.
Now I was just trying to think, level cap
Frostbolt
deals about 861 damage according to reading the description. Now in PvP my buddies say they dish out about 5k+ per cast and then there is the crits.
What spells do Boomkins tend to use to dish out their DPS? I know there is
Starfire
and
Wrath
. How much difference in DPS are we looking at between mage and druid?
Sorry if their was a thread about this I didn't see anything, thanks for the help!
I have a 32 mage and a 42 (in a sec) druid so debating :P

Boomkins that are looking for big crits usually never do well in PvP. The good boomkins make the most of their Dots, hots, and CC's. Theres not only a difference in dps but a difference in playstyle and honestly, you won't know til you play it.
Take advantage of PTR. :)

eh Im trying to get the PTR up on my computer had some issues...
idk basically I was trying to figure out how much basic damage mookin vs mage would be from like one cast, like mage just using their frost bolt and boomkin using starfire

Well, he's talking about Wintergrasp or other bgs, not really arena, and there's a much higher chance for stand and nuke there. With good PvE gear, no consumables and solo (no raid buffs), Starfire can deal 9-10k crits (on the first) and then 10-11k on the following ones (+13% from Earth and Moon) if you are lucky (i did 2-shot a paladin like that).
As others have said though, don't go into moonkin PvP and expect to be able to cast starfire, any opponent with a brain will interrupt you or silence you or cc you to prevent you from casting them. Moonkins can dish out good damage but are recognizable and easy to shut out.
(others would even say "don't go into moonkin pvp at all")

we're talking wintergrasp, right?
he probably had
Tenacity
. enough of those stacks and yeah, i could see a good boomkin 1-2 shotting people.
and as for pve. mages usually out-dps boomkins. but boomkins bring SO much more to raids/instances. so its a toss up between pure and more dps, or dps/utility

thanks, ya I am planning on doing duel spec of boomkin and healer (eventually anyway). And ya sorry I probably should of said (didnt think about it) but ya I was thinking of damage in PvP.
Ya, I am trying to force myself to focus on my druid lol, I am leveling him pretty well.
Also, I was wondering, with boomkin and healer, what kinda stats do I want, are they pretty much the same for both?

If you are looking to PvP as a caster then I would say mage all the way. I love my moonkin and in WG and some BGs I can really put up some good numbers... that is until someone goes hmmm who is that big owl putting out all that damage. After that its game over.
If you are just doing PvE and BGs WG then you could do well with Moonkin (i Love it)
If you are looking to go caster pvp in arenas your probably better off with the Mage
The biggest difference is feral pvp and resto heals are awesome in all PvP so if you decide in 10-40 levels that you might want to try something else out you would have that to fall back on.

Aye druid's the way to go if you're still figuring out what you'd like to do and after that they're still a fierce competitor.
Generally druids do have the larger
nuke
but lack the special characteristics such as a fire mage's
Ignite
, a frost mage's
Ice Lance
causing 4x damage, or an arcane mage getting numorous crits off a single
Arcane Missiles
cast and the abundance of instant casts.
Druids also lack
Molten Fury
type talents but in their stead bring raidwide buffs and debuffs, can cast 2 aoe spells at the same time,
Starfall+
Hurricane.
, able to swap to a support role on the spot, and rather than rolling a new class you can simply respec/regear for the job.
If the wintergrasp boomkin in question were say in a large cluster inside the fortress and decided to aoe, was in a vehicle/turret, or had a tenacity stack that'd help explain their high dps.

ah ok, thanks for the list :P
noobish Q, um whats the cap for hit ? :)
got another question, I have had some higher level characters, but I have never messed with gems. I got on a Premade character in the PTR (testing mage/druid) are you only allowed 3 gems total? (sorry its a noob question lol, just never got around to it :P)

Raid boss spell hit cap is 17%
Balance of Power
brings it down to 13%
Improved Faerie Fire
brings it down to 10% with
Faerie Fire
on the target
Heroic Presence (Draenei Racial)
brings it down to 9%
Other classes may have debuffs increasing chance to hit allowing some leeway. However that's not always a given so basically the mark to hit is 10% spell hit, ally can get away with 9% with draenei. Hover over your character's hit rating to see the percentage.
It's really not a lot at all and endgame can be easily overshot with your basic gear before +hit trinkets, gems, or chants.

I was thinking of using the glyphs of
Regrowth
,
Swiftmend
,
Nourish
for my healing spec and Glyph of
Innervate
,
Monsoon
, and...idk would
Wrath
be ok as that's probably gonna be one of major spells used? or should I just go with
Starfall
?
Btw wasn't sure as I never did it, but being duel-spec has 2 different sets of glyphs right?
woops, my buddy answered that for me :)
Thanks for all the help guys :P
