Ok, so this isn't a "practical" response, as to how the mechanics of warlocks and spriests differ. More emotional, tbh.
Warlocks are fundamentally demonologists. The experience of playing one is quite heavy and dark. You capture the soul of your dying enemies, using it later for your own purposes. You set your enemies on fire from within. You curse them with agony. You hypnotize them. Implant time bombs. All the while you are controlling a demon who assists you as a slave.
Shadow priests are -- from this perspective anyway -- a lot more mundane to play. Mind flay, mind blast, SW:Pain, SW:Death...they are certainly high-DPS spells, but my experience is that they don't have the emotional guts of the warlock playstyle. When I play my spriest, I don't get the feeling of dark power that I get playing my lock.
Yes, this is a bit RP-ish, and even though I don't really RP or play on an RP server, I find that it's this dimension of the playstyle issue, more than just "which gives higher dps?", that makes a class fun to play. Blizzard is striving to equalize the raw numeric (dps) output of the various classes. But the playstyle, in the sense I just described, is not fundamentally changing. So pick the style you enjoy, not the one with (currently) the highest numbers.
i agree that warlocks RP is more..."malicious" if you know what i mean
with those replys about playstyle and roleplay i can now get the full image of it
thx again for your responses :)
