Just start collecting some DPS gear, Even PVP gear will do fine. Equip some slow one handers, and spam devastates and heroic strike. Thats all there is too it.

Protection Spec soloing is much better in 2.3. IMO, there are only two viable approaches.
1. Dual-wield Devastate Spam - This was viable before but with the 2.3 changes it is much better and actually not that far off from Arms/Fury - still slower but the gap has been significantly narrowed. You'll want a slow, high-DPS main hand weapon. For your off-hand any high DPS weapon will do. If you plan to use Zerk stance a slow weapon would help on Whirlwinds now that it hits with the off-hand as well. The rest of your gear, pretend you are a Fury Warrior, get some +hit and expertise, stack up on AP - STR is your best route for AP due to Vitality.
2. Shield Block Value Stacking - This is a sword and board style that relies on pushing your Shield Slam damage up by stacking Shield Block Value (SBV). Get all the high SBV pieces that you can get your hands on. In slots where you don't have SBV item focus on increasing your crit rating and working in some AP. A little +hit and expertise helps too because missed Shield Slams suck. You'll end up using a lot of tank gear by stacking SBV so you'll have a ton of armor and your shield, your survivability is amazing. You often get high Block Rating in a set like this to and with your high SBV you can block completely (or damn close) the entire damage of non-elite melee mobs. You can take on packs of melee mobs without a problem. Going up against melee elites is cake, you can even sit in defense stance and spam Shield Block and mitigate tons of damage while spamming Revenge, Shield Slam and Devastate for solid damage. This is also a better route via casters because you can Bash and Reflect and use Concussion Blow if needed, you just shut them down - still, avoid taking on multiple casters, you'll get rofled by 3+ caster mobs.
Both options #1 and #2 are somewhat gear-dependent but that comes with the Warrior class. I would say that option #1 is less gear dependent, just make you sure you have a nice, slow MH weapon. Option #2 requires a hefty amount of SBV to really shine. Both routes are fun though and rather enjoyable, IMO.
Last point... NEVER 2H as a Protection Warrior, there is no synergy from talents, you have no instant attacks. Don't do it, ever.

I was relieved to see Birrd covered just about everything I thought of while reading this thread.
Personally, I'm a Shield Block Value person and that's what I stack for solo farming. I was glad to see Birrd mention Revenge finally, as that's incredible and the crits for that are really helpful. Rotating abilities like that, you just simply mitigate most enemy attacks and that opens up your own, blocking means rage for Heroic Strike and dodge/parry additively enable Revenge yet again.
And as everyone knows, killing with heavy protection talents can be slow...but going with the shield option means you always have a chance when jumped, either by another mob or by a player.
