There are successful arena players using a Prot healing spec. They are, however, deeply in the minority. Deep Holy specs (51/20/0 and variants), Hybrid specs (32/0/39 and variants), and the everpresent Retribution specs are all significantly better represented at the highest tiers.
The success does not cross over into PvE raiding. You actually lose throughput due to the loss of major amounts of haste and crit. Your mana efficiency is much less due to lower crit numbers and the loss of Divine Illumination. The spec has no flexibility without Beacon and Holy Shock.
Big crit numbers alone do not make for a better spec.

Even for PvP this is shiait.
To quote someone else (dunno who)
You're like a self healing fortress.
And to quote myself
YOU are a self healing fortress but your friend gets left in the mote waiting for the crocks.
Someone was even so kind to post a video where the maker in the beginning stated that he got killed by the other team quickly. And his partner being a prot healer was left in the fight for 45 minutes.
If you dont give a F about your partner and think you can outlast the other team long enough that they'll /afk (or if they know what the arena is they'll probably have you dead after 5 minutes tops).
Go ahead play prot and heal it's your loss i just hope i meet you in the arena.

In regards to it being a $%^& spec for PvP, i completely disagree, its no more ilogical then going ret/holy, a
healer
who can really help out the dps with stuns etc in combat is highly useful, 4 second repentance every minute or a 3 second stun every 10 seconds, i know which i'd rather have.... as well as this a 30k+ healthed healer in plate with the ability to heal me for a 10k FoL would be greatly appreciated.
Yea the underlined part is where it goes bad.
With a 30k health pool you dont have more than 5k mana. What are you gonna do with that mana?
If you're using DP to keep that mana up your not healing for 10k you're not even healing for 10k without DP up.
Just realise it as i said the spec is great if you wanna solo your way through arena and hope that people are gonna /afk when you've fought them for 30 minutes.
If you need a 3 sec stun every 10 seconds to bring down the other team there's something seriously wrong with your partner. Repentenance + HoJ i've found to be more than enough.

To be fair i know that neither me, dunsinane and kenyon has anything against trying something new (atleast to my experience).
But when you see a certain type of spec several times each day and you have indeed tried it out yourself and you know exactly what's wrong with it.
You're not gonna go and encourage the next guy to use it. As i said before the prot healers are "F everyone else im gonna stay alive healers".
The entire spec relies on the healer itself taking minimum damage. But doing so hurts the healing output, by
alot
.
Unless blizzard removes the healing reduction from DP or make some extraordinary healing talents in prot i dont think it'll ever be viable. You cant heal good enough in it.
Sure you can take one hell of a beating BUT if your partner gets focused he's left for dead.
Remember i take high ranking arena matches into accounts here. A spec isn't viable if you're able to get to 700 rating and no further.
If you cant take my word for it go spec 23/48/0 play arena for a while and get up in the ranks you're gonna have a real struggle when and if you get to 1800+.

People, stop thinking that just because prot has a talent that increases healing DEEP in the tree, that there will be any spec with a focus on healing worth it's salt that includes it.
Touched by the Light is a PROT talent for TANKING. There is no way AT ALL to be a good healer if you have it. You might be able to pull of 'merely adequate' or 'barely doesn't suck', but you will never be good.

Deep Prot with Healing gear on is a great spec for BG's and it does well in arena as well. I personally go with a holyshock/repentance build. But i fight these guys all the time. They do really well. They are hard to kill and there mana is near endless. On top of the effective silence(AS) which also hits for a ton, and the reduced CD on stun. Your also getting all the prot survival talents. The only problem with the spec is it doesnt allow for instant heals. Its easy to interupt a healer u know has to actually cast. I 2v2 with a feral druid, between repent, stun, charge, and cyclone rotations. They are farely easy to lock out. Def not a spec to be scoffed at tho.

You're saying one should spec Prot/Ret and wear holy gear?
How do you have 79-81 talent points?

You do realise he was taking your side ;p
Thrice is specced 32/0/39 he sometimes get put up against prot/holys in arena and their silence and reduced stun.
While he has repentenance.
I was confused at first too but if you read it slowly it's kinda understandable.
