A few r/l friends and I are rerolling a few character to level together. We have a warrior (tank), hunter, mage, and warlock. I am rolling a healer and it's between a priest and a pally. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

I do believe paladins have Holy Shock, which adds so much to their healing it's worth forgetting. And they can heal with silly seals, like healadins will ever do that.
As for priest you forgot the all so great Divine Hymn!
Also priest have the cheapest
Resurrection
and also gives the most healing and mana back.
Paladin got the worst one,
Redemption
and they stole our icon!
Shamans
and
Druid
are in between.

IMO the hymms will be much better for PvE in 3.1 then they are now, though the wording on the PTR notes confuses me...
If your looking for something simple pallies are for you. Priests are more complex, but also more versatile and have 2 trees dedicated to healing.
One nice thing about healadens is there really isn't anyone else rolling on caster plate gear. While it is more rare, when it does drop, there are fewer people actually rolling on the gear.
All in all though, priests ftw!

Also the new hymns fit within the Ulduar fights, I believe. The Hope one can restores it mana during the boss breaks during lore events. And Divine provides a lot of HpS for desperate situation.
What wording confuses you, I got confused by your confusion! =s
And we also got Holy Nova. The list gets bigger.

If you are going to be playing with friends, I would almost certainly say a priest.
Priests can, as already stated, choose between two talent trees for healing, something no other class can do.
Priests offer buffs such as Fortitude, Shadow Protection, Fear Ward and next patch, Divine Spirit, which have great synergy not only with the clothies, but fortitude and shadow protection are useful to any class!
Paladins CAN compete in way of buffs in my opinion though, with wisdom, might, and next patch kings being baseline.
However I feel that while leveling, particularly from the 1-58 bracket, VERY little caster plate will drop, or even caster mail.
In terms of playstyle, Paladin healers tend to spam 4 buttons in order to keep people alive, sounds fun doesn't it?
Priests have so many tools they need to conciously decide which heal is best at which point in time, and thus a degree of a brain is required to play one, and this goes for whichever spec you play.
As Discipline, you will be about migitating damage through shields, Divine Aegis Proccing, using Penance at the right time, as it has a cooldown, and using your power word: shield efficiently to get full mana returns from.
Holy will be more reactive healing with instant casts such as PoM, CoH, renew, flash heal, binding heal, and longer casts such as Greater Heal and PoH. Priest healing ftw! <3

Anyways, you'll be with others, the armor value pallies have over us is nil if you don't plan on getting attacked...

You will, of course, get a Priest bias here...
Paladins have their strong points as well. One thing I found particularly fun, was leveling as holy and being able to tank AND heal all the elite quests, while my friends benefitted from my buffs, judgments, and auras.
Their healing methodology might be more simple, but dang its powerful. Even on my undergeared paladin alt, I knock out 16k crit heals easy, and rarely run out of mana. WIth all the talents that increase the cast speed of spells and Holy Light specifically, you can be knocking out chain 16k crit heals back to back every 1.5 seconds. It's pretty nice.
Add that to Beacon of Light, which makes you able to keep two targets healed up at once, a staticly selected target, and whatever you are actually healing. The raw healing power is staggering.
That being said, I enjoy my priest much more then my paladin. At least as far as healing goes. The paladin is more fun to DPS on, in my opinion. And, I find the ability to gather up a set of gear for all three sets to be a very strong point, especially for an alt.

Yes, it is nice to have a good majority of your gear to be viable in all 3 talent trees.

well, ya.
But, I actually meant... I am slowly collecting an epic set of Ret, Holy, and Prot gear on my paladin. Combine that with Duel Spec, and I can always help out a guildy with a group, or fill a wildcard slot in an alt naxx run.
Playing devil's advocate and promoting paladins :-p

Traitor...j/k. I've always commented to my old roomate that I should have rolled a pally for healing instead of a priest, simply b/c of how much simplier the class is.
2 healing trees can be nice, but really, look at our tier gear...it sux for healing b/c it has to be viable for 2 trees.

go pally if you want more exclusive gear instead of rolling against mages + priests + locks.
but priest is better than pally anyday. I usually dont like healing with them if i can choose a sham or druid.

priest as healers are MUCH more fun, and fun for leveling.
leveling as shadow is win, why? because you can effectively heal yourself from the damage you take and spirit tap makes going oom a rarity not only that but healing as a priest is awesome, a paladin? oh look... holy light, FLASH OF LIGHT!
....
zzzzzz
Paladin's who only use holy light and flash of light are bad pallies. Paladins have SO many tools available to them that help the raid group. If you learn all of them, and use them, your group will benefit in ways that direct healing never could. There's definitely something to be said about a well played paladins addition to the power of the raid as a whole.
If every healer just healed lots, and ever tank just smashed face, and every dps just pewpew and stabbed. Nothing would get done. A cohesive raid group has roles that intertwine and mix. Mages frost nova'ing to prevent healers from getting hit, pally healers preemtivly casting hand of salv on the highest threat dps so they can keep pounding the boss. Hybrid dps that had heals shooting off heals to people that might die so the healers can focus on keep tanks up. Offtanks miticulously piecing together a dps set so on fights that only need one tank they can max their pathetic damage. Healing priests helping zombie kiters with shackle undead instead of solely watching health bars bounce around.
Thats the problem with how people are comparing priests to paladins. Based on JUST heal spells, they are vastly different in healing mechanics. Priests simply have more variety, more flexibility and some claim more fun in the healing spell department. Compare the classes as a whole, on raid involvement/benefit, extra perks of playing that class, and intricacies of the class in general.... It's a much different story.
