Yes PWS generates threat when you cast it. But once it up it doesn't generate threat, so casting to preemptive works.
Not that threat is a problem if your tank can push the AoE attack button.

i have a glyph on it that heals also...
i wonder if that generates threat ? im not that scifi type....
I assume it does. Mostly the exceptions are written on it. Like
Holy Nova
.

do i generate threat by casting power word shield and if so when.
Be very careful with this. Threat is generated when the shield absorbs damage, and that threat belongs to you.
Tanks will pull in one of three ways. Either they open with a damaging attack (like
Avenger's Shield
), a non-damaging taunt (like
Death Grip
), or they simply body-pull (meaning they walk in aggro range of a mob). So consider a body pull in which you pre-shielded, but didn't cast any other heals:
Tank walks in range, generating a small amount of threat. Enough to cause the mob to attack them.
Mob hits the tank for 1000 damage. It is all absorbed by the shield bubble.
All the threat from that absorption goes to YOU.
You are now at the top of the threat list. In other words, you pulled aggro.
You die.
Not that I would know anything about that...
I will typically wait for one hit before I cast shield...either the tank hitting the mob or the mob hitting the tank. That's plenty to ensure I don't pull aggro. It's a rare mob or boss who will use their "now I will one-shot the tank" attack as an opener, so this is almost always a fine tactic.

It does? I never noticed that.
At the other hand one AoE attack from a tank should aggro all mobs and you never ever get threat of them again... So you will only die with retarded tanks that cannot push a button.
And if you ain't feeling safe there is always Fade so that you even can give the tank like 5 seconds to push that button, while healing him.

My guild tanks just body-pull occasionally, which is totally fine. They are neither retarded nor incapable of using their abilities, but I'll mention your comments to them. I just wasn't prepared for it the one or two times they body-pulled. Live & learn.

What Paolo described never happened to me. Does it really generate threat when damage is absorbed? I used to think the shield causes a huge amount of threat (I was persuaded it instantly gives you the amount of threat proportional to the amount of damage the shield is capable of absorbing), but only when it was cast, because I often get aggro if I cast it, but never when it absorbs damage.

If you got a good tank, and you are a smart person then even a body pull shouldn't be fatal.
A smart person, like you, stands in the line of the mob and the tank like this:
You --- Tank --- Mobs
So the mobs walk over the tank to get to you, in that time the tank can do his aoe attack and get aggro. How can a good tank fail pressing that AoE button resulting in you die?
Healing spells do generate threat but it's spread along all mobs so threat per mob is so minor so that the first tick of an AoE attack from a paladin/death knight already makes more threat.
Threat cannot be a problem for a smart healer with a non retarded tank. It just cannot...

I usually don't shield the tank until he's taken enough damage that the Glyph of PW:S will heal it. By this time he's pretty much gotta a good aggro lead and won't be any problem.
I do also pre-cast PoM before pulls too.

..I'd say you should bring us some proof that PW:S absorbs cause threat to the priest because i find the idea alone hilarious.
Recommend cooling off. Obviously you now know that PW:S does indeed generate threat, but there's no need to get heated, even when you thought you were right.
Everyone in the raid enters combat and is at 1 (or 0 if you prefer) threat level. Now everything you do will not generate threat by itself, but
the boss will always go for the player that did the last action
.
In what game? Not in WoW...threat mechanics are far more compex than this.
For example using bloodrage or a bandage will cause the boss to go for you although the threat level doesn't go up.
I think you're missing something here. The boss
only
goes for the person with the highest threat. "Having aggro" means "having the highest threat." So in fact threat level
does
go up from all of these "secondary" actions.
so the question becomes do i generate threat by casting power word shield and if so when.
I think we got there.

My understanding and practice is that PW:S applies it's full threat when cast then generates no threat afterwards. I'm gonna do some testing to see what actually happens. I just know when raiding Pre shielding the tanks has never caused me a problem, if they do Heroic throw, Avengers shield, Death Grip ranged pull and then I shield them, the second that shield goes up I pull aggro.
As for Pre-casting PoM, they say that PoM
should
generate threat to you now, but I don't know if they fixed that bug.

Why are we even talking about healing and threat? Healing threat is like nonexistant and even a melee swing from a tank generates more threat than a crit greater heal.
Post by
Shiverlynn
Sincerely, it does not. Healing threat exists. There are just two things to consider:
1) Healing theat is 1/2 of the healing done, whereas DPS threat is 100% of the damage done, so it is easier to hold aggro against a healer than a dps;
2) Healng threat is spread between all the enemies, making it even easier to hold aggro against.
But healing threat is not inexistant. There is no way I can hold aggro against a healer on a single mob by auto-swings only if you spam me with greater heals, each healing me for, say, 10k, which will generate 5k threat. My auto-swings do not hit for 2k, you know.
