It might be slower to level that way since I assume most of the quests require you to be level 58. So maybe with a ton of hit rating you could effectively grind there, but that would probably be slower than questing in vanilla content.

I know that if you are not having to stop to eat or drink then grinding is ok.
IF NOT you either need to find green or yellow mobs or quest

I went to Outland at 56 on my AoE spec Priest; 56-60 went crazy fast.
A priest can AoE much more effectively than a moonkin at 56, however (imo).
If you like grinding, Outland will be the best place to do it, if you like quests then stick to Vanilla. The speeds will be comparable unless you can kill quick and continuously. (Taking this as fact, I'd choose grinding since you actually
do
stuff when you grind, I feel like quests are 75% travel time in Vanilla).

Last time I checked you cannot go through portal(the black gate) until level 58. I wouldn't advise to go to outland before level 58 since mobs will be 4/5 levels higher than you ( if you're 55 ) and your going to miss like crazy

I believe you're correct about the Dark Portal, but there's nothing stopping you from getting ported to Dalaran or Shatt and just flying (you get the Honor Hold FP automatically). I usually set my Hearth in Dalaran immediately after making an alt, just to save travel time while leveling... i.e. Getting to Outland shouldn't be an issue at any level.
Bonestripper Buzzard
-- This is what I killed at level 56. As a Boomkin with IFF and Balance of Power, he's automatically hit-capped for mobs up to 2 levels higher than himself. That means at 55, the OP would have a 0% miss chance on a good chunk of these buzzards... i.e. Level gap should not be crippling, as long as you choose your mobs well.

The time from 55-58 goes so fast even in azeroth that I'd say going to Hellfire peninsula (with it being VERY easy to die) will ultimately make the process slower.
If you haven't flown around to get all of the Hallow's End candy buckets, that's about 200k experience right there flying around, so 1.25 levels? Running around Felstone Field, popping Barkskin + Hurricane after gathering 8-9 mobs works out very well.

i have a shadow priest too, but i cant remember at which level i got mindsear but it was not at 55 i believe... thats the only aoe that is worth call a good dps spell for a priest hehe (oh its the only aoe....)
You should see me Holy Nova farm... Out of all the toons I've grind leveled, the priest was the fastest.
I won't go into the details of what makes it viable -- if you're really interested, there's a few threads on the Priest forum about it. It works though, trust me on that one. (I'll admit it's quite dependent on having 2x
Discerning Eye of the Beast
, however).
