My rogue is a level 40 and I've never done the pick pocket thing. I've tried, but failed everytime. Can someone please explain how to do this to me? Does it have to be to a foe, can you do it to someone in the same class, etc? Thanks in advance!

You can only pickpocket NPC's that have pockets (most humanoids). Use distract / sap and such to get up to your target without being spotted. Auto looting will help since you dont have to click inside the loot box after you have used pickpocket allowing you to faster get away / attack.

There's a glyph that increases the range. I found it made the process much easier.

If you intend to pickpocket often, another thing I found convenient was to macro Pickpocket to your opener of choice, for example:
/cast Pick Pocket
/cast Garrote
That way, every time you open, you automatically pickpocket, without having to think of doing it separately. This helped my lockpicking tremendously when I rolled into WoTLK, as previously, I let lockpicking get very far behind and had to backtrack and set aside time to level it. Once I made this macro for myself, I had bags full of junkboxes to pick, and my lockpicking was comfortably levelled by the time I hit 80.
Another benefit of regularly snatching lockboxes is that you never know what might be inside. There are slim chances of getting useful epics from junkboxes that you pickpocket, such and daggers and thrown weapons, as well as potions.
