Pet specific abilities(help)

After doing some research on Petopia, I decided to get a bat for my 1st pet. My problem stems from the specific pets abilities. Petopia states that bats can learn screech(rank1) at level 8. The bat was lvl 9 when it was tamed and after 7 lvls still hasnt learned it. I've done both long and short range combat with him and still nothing. Is there a certain lvl that pets get specific abilities or do I need to tame a higher lvl pet to get the spell? Thanks for any comments.

level 8 in order for it to learn that, yes.
