You know, from all of the hunters I've known and classes that carry pets with them, most don't really are whether or not their pets die anymore. Maybe back in BC when Beast Mastery was the big thing and your pet actually did some respectable damage, but nowadays, it's really not a concern to them. I see a lot of them forget to put their pets on passive at the beginning of a boss fight and have it die right off the bat. But they don't really care because it's like 0.5% of their overall damage even if it's alive for the WHOLE fight. Which it never really is.

^ this. I have yet to see any Hunter pet survive a boss fight with AOE damage in Ulduar or Naxx, and the Hunters still are able to be respectable on the DPS meters. Hunter pets just don't do THAT much damage to justify healing them.
In 5-mans, I'll keep an eye on the pet's health bar, but mostly to make sure they don't have some sort of debuff that could affect the rest of us -- something stupid like getting snared while we're trying to pull a mob away to avoid a chain pull. Little stuff like this. But in a boss fight, my priority is most certainly the party itself, as they are far more important in the long-run.
EDIT:
Just like when warlocks drain their health bar right down between fights, just when I am trying to regen manner (especially annoying if they've got free food and drink from a mage in the party).
Take a glance at how much mana a Warlock spell costs to cast. There's a reason they have the ability to turn HP into MP -- it's the whole concept of the class. During trash pulls, you should have plenty enough mana to... you know... heal someone. :P
