I think it is important for anyone, not just the raid/guild leader, to understand that while shards may be expensive, for the most part, people getting items to help the guild/raid is more valuable.
If it is an upgrade, then it is an upgrade. Be that an physical DPS leather item going to a Arms/Fury Warrior, DK, Enhancement Shaman, Kitty Druid, Hunter or Rogue, or cloth healing gear going to the Paladin instead of the Priest. If the item has the stats that are effective for your spec/role within the guild, and you are going to make use out of it, then you have the right to /roll /bid /whine for it.
The only problem I would have would be people taking a lot of stuff for off-spec when they aren't really clear as to what their off-spec is. I don't like people that focus on tanking/healing for example to start randomly building a dps set. I'd rather let someone that was focusing on a tanking/dps set get that item dps item first because I think they'd get more use out of it; but that is just my personal preference.
I think common loot practice/priority is:
Main Spec > Secondary Spec > Alt > DE
I also think out of common courtesy though, that you wouldn't roll for another off spec item against someone else if you have already won an item for your off spec that run. But by all means, save it from being DEed.
Now if the item you want is purely for giggles (like a tanking sword going to a mage/warlock/hunter), then I would expect a shard from them.

To the OP. That situation is moronic.
On the armor class discussion.
If a cloth healing item drops and there is a holy priest and holy paladin in the group. The piece is a big of an upgrade to both of the players.
Then to me it's a given that the priest should get it. Sure one could argue that since it's as big of an upgrade for both they'll just roll/bid for it and whoever gets it gets it. But a priest can only wear cloth while the paladin can wear any armor class.
Atleast i know i would pass on "less-than-plate" pieces if someone that can only wear that armor class needs it.

Ditto. Plate is considered a "need" item for Paladins in our guild, while cloth is considered "greed" for them. But we award gear to whomever can use it before we even consider sharding it.

Or tell them to get %^&*ed and bubble hearth in the middle of the next boss fight.
This. Is what I should of done.
What makes this worse is that it was a guidie saying this and i pretty much had to leave the guild over it as they all agreed with him... humm.. probably better i'm not in that guild ;)
this happened at lvl 79 and as ppl have said i ran a number of hcs last night and had no problems so im happy :)
Next time what you should do is instead of bubble hearthin is to DI the tank and leave the group...It'll be a lilttle while before they realize what's going on :)

Sorry, but I`m not stacking plate gear just in case our tanks or dps cant do their job properly. A tank is supposed to keep aggro, and dps should never overaggro.
I also dont think the CC is a very good point, since I doubt a druid will have time to root if he is being hit for 15k per second.

I didn't read any replies to the above post due to my lack of faith in humanities intellectual levels. Most people feel the need to argue with people replying to the OP, rather than just making their own reply.
And as a result, you've missed 30 posts saying pretty much the same thing that you've said in your needlessly oversized post (since we've all already read what the OP said anyway, there's no need to quote the whole damn thing).
People arguing with others replying to the OP is a legitimate replying use of the thread. It creates discussion, which brings new ideas. It's better than having a thread where the OP reads 20 replies saying "I'm Right!", without any justification why one person is more right than another.

I just can't believe the game is how old now and people still don't know to give out loot.
My thoughts are this: I don't want to hear someone else who has never played my class tell me how to gear. I did my homework on holydins a while before I dinged 80 and it paid off in spades. I wrote the article in my sig block when I was level 74.
I've been a healdin for 3 weeks (same time I hit 80) and it took some proving myself out in the field to allow my guild to let me heal a 25 man naxx run. Now I'm the second best healdin in the guild with a track record of rarely losing tanks. (I say second best because we have a healdin that's been doing this for years, and he also has a better gear rating than me (2312 vs my 2136).
I digress, this isn't a hijacking post. I found myself in more then a couple pieces of mail while I was getting my gear set together. For example...
Legguards of Nature's Power
are great healing legs when you need more crit, a drop from Culling of Stratholme, as opposed to the only other epic healing legs from heroics I'm aware of for pallys, the
Leggings of Protective Auras
which have haste instead of crit. At the time, I chose the mail because I had close to 600 haste but was only had about 30% holy crit (44% for HL and HS, 38% for FoL when adding talents).
There is no healing plate chest piece from heroic dungeons
, so my next best option was
Revenant's Breastplate
.
Hell, in a 25 man naxx pug the raid leader suggested giving me the
Legguards of the Undisturbed
when no shammies rolled on it which was a huge improvement for me. It's mail, big deal. Did you keep the tank up during Patchwerk? Great, good investment.
