You put out more damage by not bothering. Getting slimed means moving, which means less dps.
The quantity of dps that is lost by doing this is laughable.
(and thus, warnings) for mobs you don't have targetted
No, it does.
All the previous arguments are fine and dandy, but the fact is that I can't recall the last time I saw anyone pull agro off a tank without an agro wipe, or by simply opening up dps too quickly. This discussion seems better suited for pre-wotlk.

The slime not only drops your health but your mana to half too, that seems incredibly stupid to intentionally start yourself at half mana. I don't know about energy, but forcing yourself to kick on mana recovery twice as fast looks like a terribad way to increase your DPS.

I get close to pulling all the time, with pretty much every tank I run with bar one. Geared tanks, and tanks that I know are doing their rotations right cause I've played with them for a long time. I sit and watch Omen and see my little bar continually climb higher and higher and have to dump it constantly. Telling yourself that you don't need another tool cause "I haven't seen anyone else pull lately" just seems kinda ignorant.

How hard is it to understand that just because your raid's dps can't break a tank's TPS doesn't mean everyone's can't? Omen allows all DPS classes to open up quicker by starting at 100% dps and only backing off as they approach the tank's threat. This means they stay at 100% dps longer, and thus do more damage. Even if the tank is putting out more TPS than your DPSers, they'll still be VERY close to the tank for the first 30-60 seconds of a fight due to the fact that, by design, DPS is more bursty than TPS and without a solid threat lead there will always be a risk of overtaking the tank.
I'm honestly quite confused as to why you're trying to defend that omen is useless. It provides more information than the default threat list.
Anything
that provides more information is useful, especially so if that information is easy to read.
Also, to elaborate on how exactly the threat API works, not only must you supply a
valid
unitID (target, focus, targettarget, focustarget, etc), but you also
must
already be on that mobs threat list somehow (damage, healing, etc.).
