I tried to Prot and Arms once, a long long time ago, when I was truly a "n00b".
I'm afraid it was awful, and I respecced in under an hour.

Instead of bringing 2x the number of half healer half DPS, they can streamline and have the players min/max everything by bringing 1x the number of dedicated healers and 1x DPS.

I guess I need to clarify. I'm not trying to say this type of a build would be a good idea. I don't even think it would be. If I did - I'd probably have tried it already and wouldn't have needed the post. But I did want experience from someone who had given it a chance, rather than someone who dismissed it outright.
If anyone else has given this type of thing a try, don't feel bad about adding to the list of things that are bad about this approach, why it failed, etc. But please don't add to your post count by saying something dumb and ignorant like "geez noob that'd never work".
Despite coming after (at least) two replies to the topic, this is not directed at them. I just felt based on their posts that my intended discussion was not clear.
I've seen it attempted many times and it is pointless. It's always been frowned upon since the beginning of raiding in WoW.

I've seen it being done with a holy/retri pally. Not sure how well he did in raids but he was kinda dangerous in arena. I don't have a paladin so I wouldn't know. He had high damage and could off heal pretty good

For dungeons/raids there just isn't really a need. The only benefit to that type of spec is self sufficiency - which is next to useless in a group environment. Now for solo leveling, hybrid specs show much more promise.
Honestly, if you want have the option to play two roles in one given raid, just dual spec. One boss fight you can be a healer, the next you can DPS.

Definitely not me. I always give actual names to my characters.

Haha
It just seemed like an unusual coincidence.

I'm not sure if unrelenting assault warrior would count. It'd be something like
this
?
Not sure if it'd be really good at dps though... it could work.
I think that's a perfect example of how awful this concept is.
You couldn't DPS with that spec nearly as well as someone with even a mediocre arms spec, and you'd be a really flimsy tank.
Sword and Board and Devastate alone make up for most of what you gain by going into arms.

I ran with a Druid once in Heroic Halls of Lightning. He advertised himself in Looking for Group as dps, but when we started in on trash it was noticed that he had all but 5 points in Restoration and was spamming Wrath in caster form.
So I figure, maybe he's drunk or tired or otherwise out of it and forgot to switch to his other spec. I ask him that, and he responds,
"I'm a resto tank."
He was in all epics (didn't really check which ones other than that they were level 80 epics), but couldn't pull more than 1k dps. He also never attempted to toss a heal or even toss a battle-res when I died at one point.
We decided to keep him on anyway since the other dps and I were doing more than enough to carry him. It was really funny, and sad at the same time.
