Last night I tamed a spider as a Hunter's Pet. I was looking around for an interesting name for it and found a list of scientific names for spiders:
http://www.virginiacheeseman.co.uk/scientific-spider-names-i-8.html
One of them is: (Pamphobeteus nigricolor) Giant Black Birdeater.
It won't be my choice, but it did make me wonder:
Would the name Nigricolor be an allowed name?

Good question. I understand the concern, and while I'd like to say it should be fine, I would bet ib it getting reported.
After all, I've seen people throw a fit about the word "%^&*!rdly", which means to be stingy or miserly; despite the fact that the word sounds similar when pronounced, it stems from a completely different etymology.
Really, Wowhead profanity filter? Nig-gardly is
not
a profane or epithetical word.

I once got reported when playing my now extinct alt becasue I named him something that in the scienticif world meant giant something cant remember deleted long ago. The GM whispered me stating I would have to change it linked him right to the wikipedia article where it could be found.. he came back 2 mins later and said sorry for the inconviniece and went on his way.

You might be able to name your pet with that name, but I would be more worried about the swarm of ignorant players out there seeing your pets name, and immediately thinking it means something completely different, and reporting you on the spot.

There is an country named Montenegro, which means "Black Mountain" in their language. There are candy bars in foreign languages that are Negro <Insert Word for Chocolate>, which would mean "dark chocolate"
In certain languages, "negro" means "dark" or "black," and it isn't always a racial slur.
However, political correctivists and ignorant people will most likely raise hell and report you for it. Take the risk but I'll be surprised if no one gets offended.
Pretty much this..worst comes to worst a GM might just tell you that you need to rename the pet.

A profanity filter just looks for combinations of letters that could be offensive, yes the epithet is spelled with an e but many people will spell the word with a-r at the end or just a...so the profanity filter blocks it out even though the next two letters completely change the context.
Silly, but that's usually how they work.

Yeah, I realized that the combination of letters is probably what got it blocked. Still annoying, though. The English language is being slowly being drained by the vampire called Political Correctness.

If I remember this story correctly, he was a US college professor, and one of his students reported him for using the word in a lecture. Even after he explained what he had actually said, and the school had agreed there was nothing wrong with the word, he was still fired.
Seems that in some areas, there is such a fear of causing offense that common sense has flown out of the window.

Ariadne would make a great name for a pet spider.
Or even Aragog, for the Potter fans out there. :)

I blame the people who try to kill the language by misspelling things on purpose.Or Jeff?*

Here's a better point: did you scan until you came across "Nigricolor" and go, hmmm, I wonder if I would get into trouble using that lololololzozozlzozlzolzozl11!11!11!
I scanned the list. Noticed the word for obvious reasons and wondered if it would be acceptable.
As I tried to say this is a purely hypothetical situation.
Or, did you find a particular spider, and go: wow, that's a badass spider, I want to name my spider pet that.
My spider isn't black, but green. Latin for green being viridis, I'd have to name it Viridicolor.
Third possible scenario is you actually read the translation before making a decision.
I'm sufficiently versed in latin to understand the reason for the scientific name.
You know why
that
name stood out for you.
No argument there.
