I just got a new computer. Can I download wotlk onto my new computer from the wow website, or do I need to buy a new copy.

Download everything from
this section
of your Account.
After that just keep running the game and logging into your account. The client will make sure to download whatever patch is necessary.

To amplify on the above...
When you download the game client, it will recognize your WotLK account and automatically download the expansions and latest patches. I believe it's between 6 and 7 gigs, so make sure you have enough space.
Edits because spelling is hard.

I'm assuming you mean that you have WotLK installed on an old computer. In that instance, burn your World of Warcraft folder onto a DVD and then upload it from the disc to your new rig. You could also drop your hard drive from your old rig into your new one and copy the files over.
If that is totally NOT what you meant, then yea. Go with Argent's suggestion.

Opening a computer's cover and plugging a hard drive into it does not automatically void a warranty. Check yours to be sure, but if every warranty became void because the cover came off then they'd solder the damned cover onto it.
Do you really mean to imply that adding a stick of RAM will void a computer's warranty?

You should just use your Wrotlk dvd disc. It's much faster because you start at 3.0 with just 1.5gigs to download. Installation takes about 30 minutes, which is much faster than downloading 6 gigs. Also the installer requires about 8 gigs on the C drive regardless of where you are installing it. Basically, all the files are unpacked to C temporary files, and then moved to your chosen install location. Just a warning because some people use a small hard drive for the OS and put all their games on a bigger hard drive.

Can't really understand why downloading several hours worth of patches is preferable to the simple task of plugging a HDD in and simply transferring the files, but OK.

Took me an hour and a half to dl the patches btw, and Im sure his computer is better than mine.So... better computer = significantly faster download speeds?

I wish. I just built a computer and dl'ed WoW and both expansions and all patches from the site and it took me about 10 hours. It sucked hardcore but what else could I do really. I didn't have any of it on a HD, my disc 4 in my vanilla set went bad, and I didn't own WotLK so I figured I would just do it all in one shot. I do wish (maybe they do, I never checked) once you bought an expansion and dl'ed it you had the option to order the set of discs for a few bucks so that you could use them in the future. If I had the discs, not including patches I could have installed everything in about 20 minutes as opposed to 8 hours.
Oh, a semi-related comment to anyone that might read this and is thinking about a new computer....BUILD DON'T BUY!
I know that many will read that and think there is noway....I was one of them. But I did some reading, got the courage and ordered the parts and went for it. It was so easy I could not believe it. I got much more computer for my money and I got exactly what I wanted. I didn't have to settle for this in order to get that. And it is nice to not have a bunch of Dell/HP/Compaq/ect. bloatware clogging up my computer.
Just thought I would throw that out there since this was kinda a computer build thread.

I have no idea, but does wow require any registry entries that would be made during install? or can you really just copy/paste/transfer/whatever your wow folder? has anyone actually done it?

If you have the WotLK disc(s), all you need to install is just those. You don't have to install vanilla, then BC, then WotLK. The install disc(s) for WotLK have the previous 2 versions of the game built into them, unlike the BC install disc(s). Once you install WotLK, then all you have to do is start the game and log in and you will then start downloading the necessary patches to bring you current. It's a much faster method than downloading the entire game from the account management page and then installing, unless you don't have the WotLK install disc(s) handy.
