Melee LOVE me. 5% crit to melee/hunters is pretty huge, as well as allowing a self heal.
I raid most of the time in a Feral DPS spec. It's definitely challenging, but extremely rewarding to use a spec that's not seen very often, and fight for the top of the meters while bringing extreme support and utility.
I used to raid as boomkin when LK launched all through Naxx, and while a nice change of pace, it gets boring... fast. I used to play a mage, and I can't stand the 2 button dps machines. I really enjoy having to watch so many things as a cat, and it's nice to achieve success when things go right.
Just wanted to echo this. My feelings exactly (except that I've never been Balance, only Elemental on my shaman. Same boring rotation applies.)
Edit: Sorry, just spotted this in another comment.
Dps is not great for either cat or chicken, but feral dps beats boomkin every time. If your plan is to secure a raid spot as dps or you want top dps for your gearscore, you'd better roll a mage or a hunter. A Druid will not make you happy on the dps charts.
Are you kidding me? Druids (particularly feral druids) are pulling some of the highest DPS going around. I easily compete with equally geared Mages, Hunters and Rogues. I've also seen feral druids in BiS (or near) doing equally well against pure DPS classes.

On the gear point though - Is it a really good reason to stick to a caster/caster or feral/feral pair of specs? I'd been planning on feral-tank/resto for my druid (just level 30 now), but I hadn't before been worried about how hard it would be to cultivate both gear sets.
Most Feral gear functions well in either spec. You won't be able to do both amazingly well, but it's surely possible to excel in Cat DPS and Tank heroics all in the same set of gear... While it's clearly not possible to Heal in a set of Cat gear. With the EoConquest change, you could build an entire resto set without ever actually rolling Resto, and no one would ever hassle you about it.
Basically, Feral/Feral or Balance/Resto will be easier at first, but in the end, it's probably about equal no matter what you do. (Full disclosure: I planned on making my newest druid Feral/Resto originally, but it was too much hassle and I eventually went Feral/Feral and never looked back).

Im not quite sure how much this applies for feral/feral but the tier pieces are shared, so thats already 5 slots out 16(?) you dont have to worry about.
This is true, but even so you usually want to gem and enchant them a certain way -- Hybridizing a tier piece feels like such a waste. On my Feral / Feral I have 2 sets of 2pT8 (helm/chest) so I could gem/enchant them for DPS and Tanking specifically. (Bigger deal for Head than chest, because of the Meta / Arcanum).

Orionfinn, you're new here so i'll cut you some slack.. but before you reply to a post you should look at the dates on them. Before your reply, the last post in this thread was in november of 09. Bumping a thread up from so long ago is called "necroing" and is generally pretty frowned upon.
