its not necessary, but it does help alot. I just switched from SV to MM without grim toll, and right now, I'm about even. But, yes, MM can and does out dps SV with the right gear (ArP basically).

Mm can and does outdps survival, quite frequently. But I must debate the notion that you NEED Arpen to do well as Marksman, My hunter has roughly 80 Armor Penetration, and Im normally top 3 on meters in anything I run, if not #1. I would hope that anyone who reads this, takes another look at the debate between the two specs, and try to gain knowledge about both, and make the choice based on personal experience, and not the flavor of the Current Patch.
P.S Will post armory if needed, but I will stand my ground on this;P

MM and Surv are very near each other dps wise I would say play whichever you prefer
QFT
In equal gear both specs will do darn near equal dps (player skill depending). As far as MM being more mana dependent, with as many sources of Replenishment in a raid not to mention the possiblity of Blessing of Wisdom / Mana Totem MM is not as mana intensive as it used to be. I haven't touched Viper in a 25 man since 3.1.

SV is clearly the best spec when soloing and leveling but in dungeon dps MM is the best. but if you got good gear SV could be also very good in dps.... especially at level 80. but if you wan to annoy deaths use SV when leveling i wont say anything about PVP because i dont have PVP:d really much with my hunter.
That sounds amazingly uninformed. From personal experience, my MM spec kills much faster doing solo grinding and leather/meat farming. Conversely, SV does more DPS when starting instances.
And we're already talking about lvl80.

Quote from TheRazorsEdge: Since patches alter the rules of the game, they will change the experience and the relative DPS of different specs. No way around it---doing max DPS requires updating specs from time to time if the changes are significant.
I myself have been specced Marksman since February of this year, due to the tedious-ness of Survival. Through the entire time, Ive been able to hold my own, against better geared toons. Just goes to show you, a lil bit of know how and the desire to succeed, can enable a person to top charts, and excel quicker than others do, "Hardcore" or casuals alike. It's not always about following the next big thing, I'd like to think it's more about picking what you yourself can excel at, and not about what others are doing. Example, some hunters still raid as bm, and do very comparative dps to Survival and Marksmen hunters, is that by reason of gear and spec, or mad skill, due to BM being a "dead" raid tree, as they say.

think of MM as a very gear-strict spec. in order to do maximum dps with it, or even out-dps Surv, youre gonna need to be decked out with almost all uld25 or better. you can play either spec whenever you want, its really by preference, BUT if you wanna optimizing your MM raiding, you're gonna want at least a Grim Toll of a Mjolnir Runestone AND a base ArP or about 450-500.
im actually at 362 ArP right now and im DYING to switch to MM, just to try it out. im still waiting on like 5 other things i wanna get from 25 toc/uld, but if my patience gets the best of me ill prbly switch to MM a lot sooner.
Entirely not true. You do NOT need to gem for ArP to optimize your MM raiding. ArP spec and gemming has been proven to be the highest hunter dps, however, going down the ArP route as a MM hunter is not needed to hit big numbers. MM stacking Agi has proven to do quite considerable dps, and is currently rated the 2nd highest dps spec for hunters.

I lol'd on your hit rating and 1 talent point in focused aim. Are you using food to reach hit cap instead buff AP?
