What decent player wouldn't step into a raid before making sure they're hit capped? After all, stats-wise, being hit capped is the first priority.
If you go to other forums like Mages, Death Knights, and Shamans, all of them allow for IFF/Misery to reach their spell hit caps. Death Knights most of all. They don't gear for 17% spell hit, they get Virulence and 11% spell hit hoping on IFF/Misery.
If your presence allows half your raid to switch to another trinket and 1 other piece of gear that has crit/haste/more sp on it, that's a big DPS increase if you add it all up.
Not to mention that all tank taunts use spell hit to determine if they land. And I'm not seeing warriors running to get spell hit capped.

Sadly, our replenishment and supplemental healing is kind of made trivial by the same bonuses given by hunters and paladins...
But wait! We also have the Misery talent, which increases chance to hit on the boss by 3%. Aha, finally a bonus we can truly call our own.
Improved Faerie Fire
says hi.
Let me introduce you to the "Bring the player, not the class" philosophy brought by WotLK. Blizzard stated they don't want "utility" slots for specific specs in raids anymore. The only buff that has so far remained class-specific is Heroism/Bloodlust, and, according to Blizzard, the encounters aren't balanced accounting for it (i.e. are by design doable without it).
Nowadays if you want to raid as DPS, you better do good DPS. The haste buffs in 3.3 will make things a bit easier on that part.

Just think about misery as your 3% hit from talents that you don't have to gear up for.

I agree so much
Val
Sin.
Some hybrids offer so much utility they are
required
by raids, which can be the case for Shamans. Warlocks and Hunters do not sacrifice DPS for replenishment, whereas the excuse for poorer DPS scaling for shadow priests is utility which can be negated by much more damage dealing specs.
They really messed up with replenishment in my opinion.

Misery/IFF is expected by casters. RLs I know kick Boomers/Spriests that don't spec into it, just as he would a Ret who didn't grab JotW.

Blitz needs to fix the dps issue to make this a non issue.
It doesn't seem that you've read anything about our upcoming patch 3.3 changes

Not to nitpick and not to disagree, but a ret pally who didn't grab JotW is WAY WAY different than a Spriest/Boomking who didn't grab Misery/IFF. In fact JotW is one of the few talents in the ret tree that if they don't have they are completely and utterly useless.

Any serious clothie raider will bring along pieces of gear to swap out in the case of a Spriest or a space cow comes to the raid.
