as shaggoth said, ideally you'd have a ret pally along so there's no downside, only upside.

CoE wouldn't necessarily benefit
you
, but it would definitely benefit
your raid
. Most raids have more than one caster, and +10% for everyone is a huge boost.
So yeah, you would be sacrificing personal DPS for the good of the raid.

it is +13%, and if there is no unholy DK or boomkin, there should absolutely be a lock keeping up CoEl

this
the other classes are better at applying it than us but if they aren't present then you should do it.

Yes it was comparing meta to FG/Ember, I currently use both specs. I was really just making the point of simplifying the maths to compare 20% buff to all spells for Meta for 18% of the time, and the 15% permanent buff to fire spells with Ember is misleading and does not translate to raid enviroment.
you can have meta up 28% of the time (not 18%) if you hit it every time the cooldown is up - in practice, this will lead to more than 28% overall uptime
ex:
126 second fight, pop meta once
meta will be up for 36/126 seconds, 28%
162 second fight, pop meta at start and when off cooldown
meta will be up for 72/162 seconds, 44%
these are the two most extreme cases, on fights where i spec meta, i am averaging about 35% uptime
No player is dps'ing 100% of the time, therefore a Meta lock will try to have their cooldown ticking while out of combat, and ready to use when it gives most benefit. In addition Meta has additional goodies particulary Immolation Aura, but also Shadow Cleave and Shadowfury becomes not only useable but very powerful at close range..
you should be casting something well over 95% of the time
also, meta doesn't have shadowfury

i believe dethog's saying that meta's cooldown is running between trash pulls, boss fights and such. he's making a similar point to you, that meta can be popped at the start of every fight so for 36 second trash pulls with 2 minutes of drinking in between (a contrivance, sure, but making a point) you would have 100% uptime. though phase changes with downtime are kinda worth considering too.
also, i think he's saying that shadowfury is a useful spell in those 'melee range' situations, not necessarily that it's associated with meta.
i'm sure dethog didn't need me to jump in to defend him like this, just feeling conversational and this is a discussion i've been following ^_^
