- "So sorry to hear that sir", the woman gave Mercer a sad look. "It is a decent town sir, more so than before the Baron took over. His rule has been able establish a certain degree of order. The trade has picked up with his ships patrolling the waters around here."
The woman quickly glanced around, like she was worried that somebody else was listening, and leaned slightly closer to Alistair.
- "Although there are whispers of a new goblin in town", she practically whispered. "Somebody who is said to having enlisted the remains of the Bloodsails.
Milli leaned back in her chair.
- "The trade council is getting more restless with every report of a merchant getting shaken down or a ship going missing"

Well well bloody well. Provided the 'whispers' were not some inconsequential piece of junk — and in this place, rumors rarely were insignificant, — this could mean many things. If the new goblin in town was indeed a rival to the Baron, he must have already accumulated a power base to spread such rumors. Or it could be a blunder that might very well turn out to be fatal, revealing his cards like that. Or hers. Better remember this place had much more opportunities for females to find themselves in a position of power.
Of course, the Baron himself could be spreading these rumors to flush out the competition. Maybe the 'new goblin' was his proxy, not necessarily knowledgeably so.
And speaking of, had not Revilgaz owned the place ever since the Third War? Just how old this Milli person was?
"Says who?" Mercer murmured conspiratorially when the woman leaned closer, then spoke as if nothing happened, "Can't say I've ever heard of Booty Bay without someone mentioning the Baron. Just how long ago did he take over, then? And who was the predecessor?"

- "Oh you know, a dockhand here or a petty merchant there", the woman shrugged, eyes locked at Mercer's.
- "The Baron took over... When was it... Hmm, must be already twenty years ago now. Back then this place was a full on pirate haven, the person in-charge could change in five times in a the time span of two days. It was all heavily dependant on the luck with lootings and raids, and the amount of rum available. The Baron was able to keep his bunch unified and held his position long enough to gain the support of the people by making the town more prosperous."
- "The creation of the trade council has further boosted the trade with both the Alliance and the Horde. Officially the council is the local branch of the Steamwheeled Cartel, but I think they are just the people Revilgaz has special interest in. And not the good kind of interest, I might add."

One of these days, Mercer would kill for eidetic memory. Maybe literally, bloody sacrifices were 'in' this season, yes?
"Business is business, eh?" He smiled weakly, overwhelmed by the torrent of information. "Nothing personal, so long as there's money to be made."

- "Well that's goblins for you sir", the woman smiled.
JJ
JJ had managed to find a fitting pair of leather boots for himself, not too heavy and still felt sturdy enough to provide a good footing on most surfaces. The man had also found him some pieces of clothing: a new pair of pants, a shirt and a belt.
- "I do hate to interrupt your chat, but I think I'm ready", he spoke as he walked up to the counter.

"I doubt it will be hard." Hollum tilted back his hood as if to scent the frigid air. "They would go for civilization. We should start at Kharanos."
"Hollum! Hollum put me down!" Gee cried as she rotated upside down, her hands frantically keeping her skirt from inverting.

Martin pulled out his sword. Cleaned of the blood with some nearby plant (alien azeroth plant) and sheathed the thing.
"Maybe we should carry the whole thing? Even if the bearded lady only wants the ribs, I'd like some bacon." Martin spoke with hungry eyes upon the back of the boar.

"Mostly that I need a notebook, pronto. If I try and keep track of all the intelligence in my head, it's gonna burst," Mercer complained.
"Until then, keep an eye out for anything with the words 'Trade Council' or 'Bloodsail' in it. What about you?"
Booty Bay was supposed to be bigger than depicted in the game, but knowing this somehow still did not prepare Mercer for the sheer scale of the city. Maybe he was out of his depth?
Naaaah.

- "Very little of note. The name of a weaponsmith John, the husband, plays dice with sometimes. The location of a tavern with who appearently makes excellent beer", JJ recounted. "And a lecture about why kodo leather is the best for making boots."
- "What makes those words so important? And isn't Bloodsail a group of pirates?"

"Well, apparently the Baron is not the sole representative of the Cartel here, which, in hindsight, makes sense. We'd do well to befriend this Trade Council; failing that, the least we could do is find out what would put us at odds with them and then NOT DO IT, yes?"
Mercer made sure there was not even a hint of an unspoken 'for now' addendum in his voice, because hey, they were in an open street with Light (it felt weird to mentally phrase it like this, and probably always would) knows how many peepers around.
"As for the Bloodsails, you're right, they're the second largest pirate gang in these parts, with the first being our friendly neighborhood Blackwater. For whatever reason, they haven't yet been completely round up and executed."
He made a point of not looking around conspiratorially and continued to speak as dispassionately as he could, "I should think that we could take steps to rectifying that, yes? Maybe bring even more order and security to this place."
For some reason, Mercer was confident that there were a lot less heroic champions eager to slaughter the goblins of Booty Bay solely for a fancy pirate hat In Real Azeroth than depicted in-game. Maybe that was because the said goblins of Booty Bay were very much prosperous under the Steamwheedle Cartel proxy? Yeah, probably could be it.
"And something tells me part two of what I just said could do wonders in regards to part one, provided we get some tangible results. Just a little side project, you know, something else to keep an eye out for."

JJ
Booty Bay
JJ stood silent for a moment, studying the buildings around them.
- "Most curious", he muttered. "Yes, possibly profitable and useful. And also curious."
Why wasn't a shattered group of defeated pirates dealt with permanently? Friends in high enough places? Or just a matter of manpower and opportunity cost? Perhaps time would tell.
- "Yes, those things are defianetly worth investigating. Did you say you needed some writing equipment next?"
