Made the Switch Prot to Ret

I've been Tanking since hogger so roughly from 8 to 68, and now I've decided to try out Ret. So I've got a few Question.
1) STR and AP on items vs Spell Damage? Which should I max more. Currently I have the 2h axe from Sethekk Halls 3X socketed +7 spell damage, but I can switch that to +str gems instead.
2) SOC seems to be the staple, and Yes I've been impressed by watching those nice chains of high damage procs but would SOR and then improved SOR give me more consistent DPS (PVE speaking)
3) Is Improved Judgement worth it? At first glance it seems like an auto include but after some testing it seems that you get timer bloat alot with it, sure being able to JOC or JOR more often seems like more DPS but alot of times it seems like i let it hang just 1-2 second for an xtra chance to proc while I'm hitting either Crusader or firing off another consecration.
4)I'm in progress of switching/lvling weapon smith. Hammer smith with the thunder tree is the definate route for ret but in the future if I switch to tanking again or if my guild needs me to respec for a raid would master swordsmith be compareable- The 1-hand swords seem like a good tank wep and the 2hand sword though fasters has some nice stats.
Thanks!

4) the 1 handed sword from BS isn't that great for paladin tanking, the reason it's a good warrior tanking sword is the hit rating, but paladins get no use out of it due to the lack of spell damage. The hammer of the naaru is better than stormherald for PvE imo
3) i would say it's worth it, yes it bloats the timeline, but it just means you don't have to spam it whenever it's up
2) SoC, patch 2.3 helps
1) Strength all the way

2) I'd say SoR is better for PvE.
SoR does ~200 with 0-100 spell damage
SoC is dependant on weapon damage
at Kara entry level, you're looking at ~42% proc chance of SoC and 700 damage/proc
much better than SoR imo
and if i'm not mistaken, SoR is dependant on spell crit whereas SoC is dependant on melee crit

Thanks, I hope to continue to fine-tune my ret build. My goal is to make my pali into a steady DPS machine, that can provide utitily to my party or BG group. I ran thru sethekk halls twice today to try out my build both times with a similar party. Prot Warrior, Rogue, Holy priest, Myself once with a feral druid and once with a shadow priest as the other DPS. First let me apologize this isn't very scientific and is purely observational.
First Run I used SOC came in first on DPS barely edging the rogue by like 20k damage on the damage met, I had a little more down time trying to get the stun based damage procs off of soc burned mana. 2nd run I used only SOR (no improved talent) I came in 2nd just under the rogue by about a similar amount, but had a little less downtime. Of course crits and situations can vary for each instance but overall my damage was similar.
Anywho-why all the bad rep for ret palis?!?! lol. I almost didn't get invited to the first sethekk because of being ret but after the first run they booted the feral druid over me, at least some redemption lol, now how bout 5% crit instead of 3% on imp crusader :OP

SOR its just a steady stream of 300.
This statement implies to me that there is something wrong with your gear
I have no clue how a ret paladin can get 300 on SoR, i think you have too much spell damage
would you care to link me your character?

My untalented SOR does 371 ish damage per swing, i have about 180 spell damage because i thought spell damage was where the majority of my damage came from. my current build is horrible since its my first roll at Ret, and because I plan on doing some BG work.
character is same as my name
Edit-Alot of my gear is still tank gear, since I have lived, breathed, and slept tanking since I started this game.

prot gear for ret means insanity
if you're respeccing ret, go pick up new gear

Do a little PvP for the gladiators scaled and/or pick up a few Ragesteel pieces and some other AH stuff you'll probably get better results from Seal of Command
Ret scales better with melee stats instead of the caster stats but don't forget int

pick up a few Ragesteel pieces
If you were on my server I wouldn't mind giving you the shoulders for free
that being said, the best option would be to have the gloves and shoulders from Ragesteel and the rest from doomplate for PvE

Thanks for all the input. Yes, I still have mostly tank gear-check my necklace lol +40 stam and +def rating. I'm still putting out good damage, Ie. 1 or 2 on damage meter in instances but since I'm 24 bars from 70 I'm not gonna spend the gold on BOE's from the AH. I plan picking up the PvP Items from the BG's to upgrade most of my gear and then filling in the cracks with what I can craft/Instance/raid thereafter.
To sum up:
Strength and AP>spell damage for overall DPS
Spell Damage+Talents on SOR underperforms SOC?
Need an Upgrade from Tank Gear to Ret gear-Der
I'm having a tough time choosing between benediction and Imp BOM, but I've been seeing alot of people skipping deflection, would it be wise to skip deflection and put points into both? 5% parry boost seems like 5% free mitigation and a possible boost to attack speed should we parry an attack. Why would people pass it up? Though 44 Raid AP and longer sustained DPS/less downtime is tempting.

1) yes, str > spell damage
2) all the points you need from holy are divine str, don't spend on imp. SoR
3) gear upgrade
4a)
build
it's covered in my FAQ btw..
4b) you shouldn't bee getting hit in PvE in stances and raids, that's why deflection is passed up

SoC can crit and help stack up vengeance, it might be a little unpredictable but it'll eventually out damage Seal of Righteousness.
Strength, Crit, Stam, Int, Spell damage is what you should go for in order (we seem to moving from spell damage)
I'm having a tough time choosing between benediction and Imp BOM
Benediction can help if you maybe having mana troubles... I think Imp BoM might give 44 extra attack power.. with the upgraded Sanctified Judgement talents you'll probably get more from Imp BoM

In a pve environment you shouldn't be attacked too often so the parry can be wasted, if you where an off tank it might be good to have but in general the Imp Crusader and usually Imp Judgement go better

How about if I Plan on running BG's-Deflection would be a must then correct?
Also any standard faction to pick, ie aldor or scryer? I just picked aldor but I haven't leveled my rep so much that it would be hard to change back yet. My professions are mining and blacksmithing if that's a factor.

deflection is nice for survival, however, a paladin's greatest threat is usually a caster, not melee...
that's my personal opinion and may differ with you experience, if you think you need if, go for it.
however, if the melee gets behind you, parry means nothing... so you have to ask yoursel, is it worth it?

i always see scryers as a PvP faction, however, in the long run there aren't any significant differences imo, a coupl +heal vs +mp5, etc imo
