Get better tanks.
If you're taking aggro against trash (non-raid), just kite it around a bit. =) Sheep if you can, FN if you can, or just throw some R1 Frostbolts and kite back. I disagree with "don't hit it anymore", as a Mage can usually take care of itself. Either way works, but if you're not hitting it, and the tank's not paying attention, who is it going to go after? Either a) another DPSer, or someone more important, b) your healer. I would rather take the hits from a mob than let the healer take them.
If you're taking aggro on bosses, either a: get better tanks, or b: wait a little longer. Not much you can do here.
Also, are you constantly bugging the Paladins to give you your aggro reducing talent? Always? And did you take the de-aggro talent in the Fire tree?

Threat meters are nice, but they won't be useful unless everyone in the party has one, especially the tank.
Sonicblast is right, take responsibility for your dps. pulling doesn't just threaten your life, it threatens your parties by making it more difficult for the tank to continue gaining threat, hold off on dps if you pull.
And remember this, a tank needs to be hit in order to establish aggro (at least druid and warrior), so make sure they exchange hits with the mob for a bit before dpsing. I usually wait til 2 or 3 sunders before dpsing, if your gear is good, wait till 5.

One thing I experience quite often is casters (even warlocks!) in my groups asking the paladin to bless them with Wisdom instead of Salvation. One thing I've learned as a moonkin (with a mage alt :P) is that aggro diminishment is gold. Wisdom helps with mana regen, but what good is it if you die at 60% mana because of overaggroing?
And remember this, a tank needs to be hit in order to establish aggro (at least druid and warrior)
In case your paladin doesn't pull with Avenger's Shield let him be hit a couple of times for reflective damage threat to kick in. And watch your threat when you have a paladin tanking casters because they can't utilize their aggro gaining abilities to the fullest extent (BoSanctuary, Retri aura, Holy Shield).
