One side note, for another use of Lightwell that I love : if you re holy in PvP, it's really powerful :)
DPS will really have a hard time killing you if you just stand close to your lightwell, clicking it each time it wears out, and healing yourself as usual the rest of the time (can click it when stunned, which is the main point of this spell in pvp).

At the moment it breaks dpser's cycle and they never like that to happen
Clicking the well does not even require you to have a GCD available. You can even click while casting.
There's no reason any caster can't get a click off on the Lightwell during any of their casts. A mage, for example, can start a Frostbolt cast, click the Lightwell, and get back to their target without ever needing to stop DPS.
I would say this -- the Lightwell is far from necessary for raids; however, if everyone can take just a moment to realize how easy it is to use, it can be an amazing boost to healing, and as someone pointed out, very nice for Hard modes.

XT-002, a boss in Ulduar, does Light Bombs :)

Lightwell is killable. It is a "totem." So any smart player will single target kill it.
For PVE, I find it useful particularly for 10-man XT and Iron Council hard mode. It's pretty handy for solo healing Kologarn too.
How to use it:
- Chances are that your raid is full of dumb, tunnel visioning, deaf, and moronic DPS. This means that chances are you'll be using all of Lightwell for yourself.
- Not necessary, but vastly makes XT Hard Mode so much easier. Place Lightwell to the designated "Light Bomb victim goes here" spot. Make sure this idiot clicks the Lightwell and it is nearly guaranteed he will survive even through a Tantrum so long as you continue healing the raid yourself. I can 2-heal this boss without any flask/mana potion, if that gives you an idea of how much of a help this is.
- Great self healer in Iron Council hard mode, where everyone inevitably takes AoE damage once again. Set the Lightwell when both you and your tanks are in position, and click for every chain lightning/tornado spin thingie that the short dude does. Lightwell heals for a lot but also does not use your GCD, giving time for more raid or tank heals and you will need them if you're 2-healing. It also puts you lower on the Circle of Healing's smart heal priority since you will be more topped off than others. However, don't shackle yourself to the Lightwell. You still need to dodge Overloads.
- Once again, excellent self healer for Kologarn. Click right when you see lasers on you, right when he does Oblivion, etc. Just saves mana in general and lowers yourself on your CoH's smart heal priority list.
- Great for Thorim if you're healing outside since it provides aggro-less healing. Plus, it is instant. Plus, it is off of GCD. Plus, the DPS who want to live will use it.
- Good for General Vezaxx, for obvious reasons, but this does require the DPS to learn to use it, unfortunately. So it also may be completely worthless. It's too hard for the tank to click it as well since General is a fat ass. Oh, and you should probably be Disc for hard mode anywho, unless you're Body n Soul shielding a Warrior tank. Oh wait, he should be intervening a reliable ranged DPS. Nevermind, go Disc for hard mode.
- Have yet to try it in Mimiron/Yogg-saron, and haven't reached Algalon yet. I doubt it's going to be too useful in those fights though, because the difficulty level of actually being able to CLICK the Lightwell amongst all the adds/flashy colors/movement factor really matters.
