Leveling a Priest...soon

My new server seems to have a notorious lack of healers, at least the times I'm on, so I've decided to level a Priest. My question is this should get the Heirloom Staff or Mace. My main is a Scribe so I have relatively easy access to Off-Hand items, as of level 15 at least.
Thank you for your time and insight. :)

It really doesnt matter.
Shoulders/Chest should be your #1 priority.

Roger that. It doesn't seem that neither +29 nor +30 SP enchants are readily available for on my server either, so....yeah :P
EDIT: What are the prime enchants for chest and weapon (if I can't get +29/+30)?

For lower levels, don't forget the
spirit
enchant. You can have a main weapon with more spell power, and a regen weapon for more spirit tap returns. Intellect and Spell Power are very good also, but a lot of people forget about a spirit enchant.

Yeah, true, however the stacking 10% to xp on both chest and shoulders far outweigh any gain from the weapon.
After that, I'd take the staff, purely because more classes can use it.
I find the SP enchant a bit lackluster anyway.

I used to LOVE the intellect enchant! Then I realized how much I had to sit and drink... ugh! It's just like extending the inevitable...The crit is constant though, which is nice, but when you have to drink, get set to sit and DRINK. like a Korean at Karaoke.

yeh, having the two trinkets help however as it gives 4% max mana back from kills.

Alright so my priority checklist is:
Tattered Dreadmist Mantle
Tattered Dreadmist Robe
with
+100 Mana
Dignified Headmaster's Charge
with
+30 SP
/
+29 SP
OR
+20 Spirit
Discerning Eye of the Beast
x2
Shouldn't take too long to put all that together :P
EDIT: I will probably not bother with enchants, unless I can find at least one of the suggestions (+22 Int, +20 Spirit, +30 SP, +29 SP) by the time I have gotten the staff.

Good list. Remember that you can use
Stone Keeper's Shards
to purchase
PVP
equivalents
which work fine
as well, though the PVE Heirlooms are usually superior (which they are in these cases). Using these PVP items can be great Stop-Gap items to use until you get up enough badges if you have an overflow of SKS's like some of us do. I don't PVP so I find these useless except to buy heirlooms. ;-)
As an aside, the
PVP LEATHER Heirloom shoulders
are actually far superior to the
PVE Leather Heirloom shoulders
for melee DPSing like Rogues or Druids, which is my current project. :-) in case anybody was considering feral druids.

Good info, Oscar.
My main doesn't do many Heroics at the moment, partially due to the aforementioned Healer shortage and mostly due to my current lack of time after dutifully doing my dailies.
I was planning on gearing some from Heroic farming during days off and some from the Argent Tourney dailies I ritualistically do anyway. That why I can at least double-dip my daily allotment of Seals and Emblems. SK Shards could be useful for temporary (or BG) gear, but it's not uncommon for Alliance to lose WG 3-4 times in a row on my server.

Just wait for it... When you finally get your healer up to 80 you'll think there's a massive tank shortage. ;-) so then you go make a tank... and try to gear it up... only to realize... There's suddenly a massive healer shortage again!

Yeah, the shortage does seem to tend toward the role you aren't fulfilling...maybe I should scratch my Priest and roll a Druid :P
EDIT: The times I'm on though, there can be 6 or 7 different groups looking for a healer for 3 or 4 different Heroics for up to an hour or longer :P

Yeah, a lot of people have the idea to level a healer when they see a need for one, not all of them make it all the way :P
Plus, a Priest is a better healer at lower levels because of the limited healing spells available to the other classes.

You generally only need one healing spell in low-level instances anyway. I healed all instances up to Zul'Farrak with Glyphed PW:S and that's really about it. Every now and then I'd throw in a Greater Heal, or a Desperate Prayer for myself. So at these levels, pretty much any class is viable, and often the balance druid or the enhance shammy would be picked over me
