To help all those DPS that seem unable to figure out how to properly assist the tank here is THE macro.
/assist
This allow you to target any mob and if your tank has the agro of that mob, it will make you target your tank target. If you do not have an hostile target, it will assist whoever you target.
You can use this macro as a standalone or use it with any opening spell/ability you normally use.
#showtooltip
/assist
/cast <YourFavoriteSpellHere>

Or, the tank could put in some reasonable effort and *gasp* mark the mobs!
DPS should pay attention to aggro and the mob they're attacking, but the number of tanks I've been grouped with since 3.3 that think 'DPS using assist' means they shouldn't take the extra second to mark kind of irks me.
Hotkeying the 'skull' binder and using it on your target really isnt that hard- and setting a kill order for a group of mobs that is easily visible really helps keep things under control. And it isn't that hard to do.
I always mark when I tank, I expect other tanks to do the same.

especially now that anyone can mark, there really isn't any excuse for not attacking the same thing the tank is attacking. Plus it isn't really that hard just to see which one the tank is attacking.
Although wildhorn I like the macro mainly because tanks have to switch mobs a bit during fights, and its nice to know if he's attacking the marked one or not.

Do u have to select your tank for this to work?
No. You just need to select a mob that is attacking your tank. It will auto-select what your tank is attacking
@JemiS: Marking mobs doesnt make your DPS to attack it. Some still attack whatever pressing TAB give them. With the macro, they still can still only TAB and actually attack the right thing.

@Wildhorn: I agree marking doesn't guarantee they'll attack it, I'm just adding my 'learning' to yours.
I've hit a string of tanks that simply refuse to mark, which to me is as bad as DPS refusing to assist.
The other problem with simply assist targeting, is that most tanks constantly tab targets for AE threat- I know I do. It's most common with warriors, but paladins do it as well.
I also know I tab quite a bit during a pull- say I want to taget the farthest mob on pull, but then swap to the caster, or some other mob that didn't pull in nicely, or one beelines for the healer early and I need to taunt it.
If the DPS just assists me, they are likely to have done so at different times, and so be attacking different targets. This is why marking is better.
It makes an actual plan for the fight, instead of the DPS haphazardly following the tank as he does his job.
Just my 2cp.

I simply have target of target on.
Tank targets a mob out of the group and goes in, I see it go to 95% health, I intercept it and start wacking away on it.
Not that it helps a lot, I stil get aggro but whatever.

There is no reason to have view target's target turned off. It even works on your focus.

I only attack a specific target if it's been marked.
I press bloodthirst or cleave and whatever target my character chooses is the one that dies.
Then again, I always run with a tank and healer that I know, so it doesn't matter.

I just ran a halls of stone where I could not figure out what the warrior tanks main target was. It was driving me nuts. All he needed to do was throw up a skull and we would have been in much better shape.

I put the tanks name into my macro keys. I also focus the tank. This way I can ToT and assist with one click, though I may experiment with the /assist focus and see what I can do with the macros I use and maybe I can get them to all look at my focus and roll off that. Would make the twins fight a little more interesting since I attack one and focus on the other for faster target shifting but I suppose I can adapt.

/assist focus
I like the simplicity of this one, and the fact that it is guaranteed to target your tank's target (assuming you set your focus to the tank).
While I think Wildhorn's macro is pretty darn cool, the only potential flaw I can see (correct me if I am wrong) is that if someone else pulls aggro on the target (and the mob targets the player pulling aggro, not the tank), and the tank happens to target something else, the macro will keep you targeted on the other mob (not the tank's target), and the likelihood of a death is increased if the mob deals big damage because the tank no longer has the aggro.
Granted, this should not happen if the tank is good at managing threat, and all DPS is managing aggro, but there is not a guarantee that this will hapen all the time.

Using the new LFD tool, I've been in two groups in the past couple of days that told the tank to stop marking.. because they didn't want to wait the quarter of a second that it took him (and the dps weren't following the marks anyway). So maybe some tanks aren't marking because they are being asked not to.

No, no, the one's I'm talking about are the tanks that refuse to mark even when the entire group is begging them to.
With a hotbound skull mark, it takes almost no time at all to mark your first target. The first target is usually the only one that it's necessary to mark, by the time it's down the tank should have a significant lead on aggro for all the rest.
