In order to make the Survival tree viable, you need to have a ton of Agility. I wouldn't recommend the tree without a good deal of Arena or Mount Hyjal/Black Temple gear.

I agree bout the agility, and this tree offers to buff your agil by a percentage. This is a PvP spec, and I enjoy it. I've a low lvl hunter and the imp wingclip is a beauty. 3 points in it gives a 20% chance to immoblize your target. Great for kiting ( like mst hunters), and for slowing flag-runners. The trap impovements, in my opinion, make this tree even better. More dmg, longer duration, and more snakes...LOL. The lvl forty sting is another flag stopper. Add readiness, and you can shut down 2 ppl. One for you and one for the pet. LOL. I like this tree because it lets the hunter live a bit longer in PvP. As for needing raid gear to make this spec any good, I think not. The elemental LW (leatherworking) set along with the Epic PvP sets, give you all the agil you'll need. And you add the popular agil enchants, or savagry, You'll be a force to be rekoned with. The agil and health buffs in this tree. would make one a ranged, an melee threat.

THIS IS NOT a PVP SPEC
This is a raiding utility spec like a shadow priest

Indeed, survival is my favourite in heroics. I go for kiting and trapping more than I go for dps, my healers always know that if they have aggro they can run to me if the tank is busy, imp feign death is of course teh sex when it's needed... and readiness is my new favourite skill, emergency traps, redo wyvern sting, 2 rapid fire during boss fights, new shot at feign death if it should fail anyway... and of course expose weakness is nice in raids and if you're playing with other physical dps.

That is the one I'm using now, I feel sad about losing the imp crit dmg, but since I mostly go for cc anyway it's ok imo. I try to have good burst dmg so I can do at least some difference when I'm not on kiting, but I'm not winning any damage meters, that's for sure :P.

I use that for everything. It does very well and i never have problems dps/CC-ing. It also works wonders on PvP.
Surely having scatter shot isn't as good as having readiness? With readiness you can just wyvern sting again...
Readiness isn't really worth it imho. The highest CD a Surv/MM specc player has is Wyvern sting and doing wyvern sting on the same person is stupid considing it will break right away because they are DOTed. I use wingclip is needed to kite stuff longer if CD on freezing trap down.

And where have they suddenly gotten this magic dot from? Wyvern sting overwrites the old wyvernsting... only one sting per hunter can be active on the target? And the highest cd we have is rapid fire... But readiness is for when something fails, if something breaks... ofc I can always trap the broken wyvern sting, just hit him with scorpid sting so he's not dotted first, but it's a hell of alot easier if I can just wyvern sting him again
