according to wowwiki
heal = 0.455 item value
int = 1 itemvalue
so that's how blizz is trying to balance out the items
that being said, this is class dependant as well, a class that utilizes HoTs will generally prefer a high +heal item as you gain more HP/tick that way
but int and +heal is pretty hard to compare... it's like comparing color of a car to the type of fuel

+int only adds mana and spell crit
overall it's better to stack as much +healing as you can
it makes all of your heals and HoTs better
where as +int only lets you cast a few more (usually only 1 or 2 more)
I'd rather be able to cast a lesser amount of more powerful heals then a slighty larger amount of less powerful heals

You will need a certain mana pool size depending on where you stand in the progression, but that's never really a primary requirement. +healing and mana regen are the main things you should be looking for.

Talents can convert +int to healing.
If youre using something like "healpoint" addon to see what's bringing you more, you will see int converted in healing points (since you can heal longer with more mana).
In the general case however, +int does nothing to +healing.

look at your plus healing
take off a piece of armor that strickly has int
then add a piece that has all same stats besides int
and you'll see your + to healing increase
its .45 + to healing for every 1 int.
or 2.2 int for every 1 healing
The only situation in which Intellect is converted to +Healing is with the Paladin Holy tree talent
Holy Guidance
, which also happens to be your avatar. Coincidence? I think not. Untalented, raw Intellect contributes only to spell critical and max mana. Stop misleading people. :P
Oh, and I never optimize gear based on Intellect. The Intellect is just typically
there
, it's mana regen, healing and often Spirit that matter more to me.

Hey, the shaman talent
Nature's Blessing
also does that.
Stop misleading people. =P

Balance druids too, but that's not the point. Only talents can make that possible.

Apparently I left out the line from my original post that said "and some other stuff I'm probably forgetting because its' 6am." Tsk. Don't judge me!
I passively block them out of mind as they put all the neat +healing talents in every talent tree except Restoration for druids it seems *grumbles* WTB
Lunar Guidance
in Resto, seriously. Now shhh, I'm going to sleep.
