What ever you do do NOT buy alienware. Their systems are ridiculously overpriced and very unreliable. My advice would be to go with: for a desktop: Dell and for a laptop: Gateway. My advice would be to go with one of the XP Desktops by Dell. Very efficient, reliable and their customer service is not bad at all.

I can guarantee you that building your own rig will be much more cost-effective than buying from a third party. If you aren't able to do that, I wouldn't recommend Alienware. I've heard far too many tales from friends about looking for support only to be hung up or transferred in circles.
If you're looking for a mid-range computer, check out Dell or Cyberpower. I've seen iBuyPower in a couple magazines and they look to have alright prices.

I'd probably buy an HP or Dell (my preference is HP) with 2 gigs of ram and a nice processor, then buy a video card from Newegg. A decent 8 series card shouldn't set you back too much at all, and you'll get a very substantial band for your buck.

are alienwares really that bad?
No. :P They are decent systems but they are priced partially for their looks and not performance. Also, many of my friends have had alienware systems (because they had 6-10k they felt like blowing on a computer >.>) and they tend not to keep their kick for very long. My Dell's however, have lasted me many, many years and have yet to significantly decrease in performance.

Seriously, go to a computer shop, get them to help you find the best parts for your budget and then make them build it. You will save heaps and you won't get left in the dust by dodgy support by Alienware and Dell and such.
