What are your professions? Two gathering professions are the best idea for a new player. Make sure you have a lot of bag space and AH/Vendor everything you find. The gold adds up.

There are only three things you can do with cash.
1. Save It.
2. Give It.
3. Spend It.
I suspect you are doing more of number three than number one.
Doing many, many quests (and daily quests) will bring the amount you earn greater. Also, don't run out and get ability training immediately as many of the are minor enhancements to your overall abilities. Once you reach 80, then be sure to get all the abilities.
You might want to have a friend disenchant the green items and list the materials on the AH.

Also, consider skipping unnecessary skill upgrades.
ie, if you don't use Feint all that often, don't buy the next rank.

My advice is simple...
When you're questing... pick up all the junk items from corpses and vendor... those little bits of money add up.
And finally, like others have said.... either have someone DE those greens and sell the mats... and sell the mats you get from skinning...
And yes, if you don't have the money... definitely do not buy anything from AH...

Greens: Sell weapons/plate to vendors, have a friend(find a friend) - D/E the rest and you sell the mats you get from it.
How hard would it be to find someone to D/E my greens? Could I just ask for an enchanter on the trade channel? Or is there a reason that isn't a good idea?
If you're in a guild, most likely there should be an enchanter... if not, definitely ask in the trade channel... sometimes, they might charge you a few gold for DE-ing the stuff for you... but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Since you're a rogue, make sure you're pickpocketing everything you can while you're out questing/farming. All that extra silver (plus the trash/food) adds up. If you are really desperate, you might try soloing a low level instance for cloth/leather/greens. For instance, you could run SFK which should get you 2-3 stacks of Wool (10g per stack on my server), some stacks of linen, a ton of leather (if you skin everything), greens, and you might hit the jackpot and score a BOE blue that you can sell to a twink for a ton of cash.

Silver/Trash?
I once got an epic item from a lockbox that I picked while doing dailies. (this was in BC)
But yes, you absolutely should pickpocket everything in sight. This skill is worth leveling right now if you haven't yet. There are guides on line. But once you get to outlands, simply picking pockets and unlocking lockboxes will level you.
Also, you have to create an AH toon. If you're alliance, just make a human, and for horde I think undead. Those are the races that are fastest to move from starting area to nearby city so they can AH.
This will save you time.
De'ing items is a better idea than just selling them on AH. Outlands' greens de into very expensive enchanting mats (at least on my server).
Blues you may want to sell.
If a blue is a small upgrade, I'd rather sell it than use it. For a green, I'd use it than de it.
Hold on leatherworking until you are 80 and have money to spend. It may be better to just buy the gear leatherworkers make, than level it. Of course you'd want your BoP things from leatherworking, but that can be done slowly.

Do some skinning runs, and you'll be set.
Also, when I first login and right before I logout I use Auctioneer (do a full scan at both events). This allows you to quickly scan the AH for several filters and make even more profit, with little time invested. At first I wouldnt try to do any filters, not until you get a week or two of "full scans" so you have some decent data... oh, and don't mess with glyphs... my lord are they messed up right now in price. You can gamble on it like I am, but since you are hurting for cash, it might not be worth the effort.
Step 1) Do skinning runs and scan AH everyday with auctioneer
Step 2) Sell skin and use filters in Auctioneer to buy/sell
Step 3) Profit
(We now know what the gnomes did not, step 2)

Auctioneer Suite
It is an addon, I won't go into details, as the site linked is the official homepage of the addon and more than explains what it does. :)
Just know that it has helped me make over 1400gold in less than 2 weeks on fresh characters(meaning no high level character on server) with about 20 mintues a day of my time. This is a very handy addon.
You can also get it on
curse
and
wowinterface
... don't want you to think I'm trying to promote a fake addon.
