If they're on the same account, I don't think you can do it.

It's not illegal, I can assure you of that.
You can't bid on your own auctions, no matter which char put them up, so you will need to use a second account to do it yourself.

You take a 15% hit by doing this, however, so the better option is to trade someone on the other faction.
i.e.: I give Player_X's Horde alt 1000g, he gives my Alliance alt 1000g. If you use the AH you only transfer 850g, as the Goblins take their cut.

Very little in the game is "illegal". Illegal means that it's breaking the laws of your state or country. An example of something illegal done in-game would be to plot someone's murder in guild chat.
Most other things are not illegal - they're simply against the terms of use or the end user license agreement. They can get you banned (temporarily or permanently), but that doesn't make them illegal.

are you sure you can't buy out your own auctions? i can understand the bidding part since that influences the price people would pay for your auctions, but why would it be prohibited to buyout your own? only affects your pockets. haven't looked it up though, browsing on my phone sucks

It's a semantic argument that isn't worth the effort. We disagree.

actually, an action becomes illegal once it is in violation of a set of rules that you should abiding by. Whether it's in the context of a game's EULA/ToS, a sport's rules, or the established laws of your state/country, if the action would break established rules it would be illegal.
This is true. The definition of
illegal
is, "prohibited by law or by official or accepted rules; "an illegal chess move".
However, I connect a different connotation to illegal that makes it something far more serious than simply "breaking the rules".
Connotation can be all-important in some cases. For instance, the same dictionary that provided the above definition of legal defines a
mountain
as "a land mass that projects well above its surroundings; higher than a hill." Living in Arizona, I used to consider the large piles of rock and sand that we have mountains - until I went to Colorado on a business trip and saw the Rockies, at which point the word took on a whole new shape and meaning to me.

Today kids, we learn by example the meaning of the word "pedantic".

I was hoping I wasn't going to have to say this. =)
It's against the EULA to use botting programs, but it's not illegal.
You would just be breaching a contract.
