I have not been playing since beta. I only started about the time Sunwell came out. So I don't think I am an expert. But I have been in a fair number of guilds -- of all shapes and sizes. I have done the hardcore raiding thing and the casual leveling thing too.
Right now, though, I am into leveling an alt and totally burned out on Ulduar. The Coliseum is not getting me revved up either. Frankly, I'd rather run Karazhan on my mage than battle Icehowl.
Some days, the people in guilds bug me too. Then I get to thinking, "Why am I playing an MMO?" I finally remind myself that I'm waiting for a few close friends to log on. That's the experience for which I am hungering, not the pew-pew or lifeblooming monotony of heroic farming.
I also have a chronic neurological illness. I get tired easily. And a lot of people don't understand this. That's frustrating.
As for the "gratzing" issue: I guess I should do it more often, but if I am not feeling good I probably am going to neglect the person. I don't do this on purpose, mind you, but it slips my mind. I don't really think I have purposefully not congratulated someone on an achievement. However, I don't expect one anymore either.
I don't know what kind of guild is right for me. There is always drama involved.

Join a Leveling guild. If you play with that kind of style they would probobly be the best type of guild for you. Normally there more social and even if your 80 and dont need to level you can still help out the lowbies.
Except there's one problem with those guilds: "Can u run me threw SFK/RFC/SM 80 trillion timez?"
Yeah.

I'm willing to give it more time, but if there is a reason I joined a guild in the first place is for the camaderie, guild chat is as quiet as a fly.
The last guild I was in had a few people leave for similar reasons. We had previously been quite chatty in /g, but after a brief (1 week?) hiatus from some of the older members, they returned to find gchat essentially dead. In the meantime, a
Ventrilo
server had been purchased, and gchat had very quickly migrated there.
Before you leave, I'd ask you to consider that people may, in fact, be talking away like crazy, just not via text.
