A: Go look them up on YouTube/WoWHead/WoWWiki etc
B: Expect the Raid Leader/Raid Members to explain the tactics to you before each boss.
C: Wing it and hope everything works out ok.
D: Something else (Post it here.)
(Explain your answer if you wish but let me know if you're answering from a Raiding Guild stand-point or a from a PUG raider view.)

From both a raiding guild and PUG pov.... more PUG though
For me the answer is
A and B
.
Yes, if you don't know the boss in question you need to read up on it and see the possible ways. But, each raid leader and guild can have different ways to do it, so the raid leader should do a quick recap of the way they want it done if some raid members haven’t done it before, or haven't done it with this group before.
The last thing you want is to start a boss fight and notice people are using different positioning or tactics to the guide you read.

No one likes to be the new guy
. Save yourself the pain and just state you haven't experienced this fight yet and if there is anything your should know.
Also, if you are serious about seeing further content it does help to familiarize yourself with the fights.
I found Tankspot.com to have some very easy to watch videos.
This. I use to lead some Naxx PuGs, and nothing irritates me more than someone who has never done the fight, and does not answer when I ask :
"Anyone who has never done this or needs info on strat, plz whisper me".
I sometimes get a whisper, I explain the strat to the guy, we go and we do it.
Most often, no whisper, we go, and I realize 2 or 3 people have no idea what they are doing, and boom wipe :(
So plz, never be ashamed of admitting you have not done this before, or even just that you don't remember exactly what to do. People prefer to explain and succeed than wipe, trust me :)
To answer the OP's question, definately A), and B) when you forgot to do A), or A) was not clear enough :)

I am not in a raid guild and I don't raid very often so for me it would be "B". There simply isn't time to read up on a lot if you get picked up by a pug and move out right away. I would read up on bosses if it were a planned raid though.

It's a bit of a combination really. In an ideal world, A, of course, but then some people will argue - with limited time on their hands, should they be spending time watching videos, or actually experiencing content? The raid leader should always be willing to explain tactics IF someone lets them know they need it. No one should go on a boss and click yes to a readycheck if they are not 100% sure of what they are doing. Just click no and ask. Don't exiect that a raid leader will always do tactics, but they should always do a readycheck click or vent confirmation and you can speak up.
As a guild raid leader we expect our guildies to know the basics, but when we take new people, we do explain it to them. Some fights, like Heigan for example, where seeing is far greater than any description, we have links on our guild forums to tankspot videos so it is easy for people to research. As a raid leader I would never begrudge someone the time to explain tactics to them, as long as they are willing to listen. Better to spend an extra few minutes at the beginning of the fight than waste 15 mins and god knows how much gold in repairs because of a wipe.
C is ridiculous, there is no point jeapordising between 9 other people (or even 24 other people) and wasting their time because you couldn't even be bothered to say "I haven't done this before, can you go over it briefly?". The raid leader is not stupid (usually), they WILL be able to see by what you're doing if you know the tactics and you'll just end up getting kicked and/or a bad reputation as an idiot. If you cause a wipe you'll end up getting screamed at, if you ask for tactics, you shouldn't.
So generally A is ideal, and most serious people will do that, however B is acceptable as long as the person actually makes the raid leader aware of their needs.

B, but I say 'I don't know how to do this boss, please explain'
I try to do A for raids, but I can only remember 1 boss fight without actually doing it myself, otherwise they all get mixed up so there really isn't a point.

if you are in a raiding guild and raid with them: Both A and then B.
First you should watch the videos on fight which the guilds aim at. Then you will ask raidleader or he does it without saying a quick recap on fight.
this is the way to success. And if people are to lazy to watch videos and blame not enuff time sir. Then you should not be in the raiding guild in first place. a boss video is usually 5 mins of your time.

Definitely A for current-end raid content.
C can be REALLY fun when the content is not uber-hard. That's how my friends and I did instances while leveling >_>

Some interesting replies here.
I posted the topic because I had a mild argument with a friend about the subject.
We're both geared for Naxx (me being a tank and her filling the role of DPS) in different guilds.
I asked her what bosses she'd downed and was surprised to hear her confess she had no idea of the boss names or tactics.
Yet she'd walked away with some good loot.
I confessed that I'd probably not let someone with no knowledge of Naxx whatsoever, into my raid... if I ran one.
She got defensive and claimed it was down to the raid leader to explain the tactics.
I got to wondering what the rest of you thought and alas... this topic was born.

A lot of people do ask for achievements in pugs and you're within your right to choose who you do or don't want in your group - but a lot of raids will take someone with absolutely no experience, certainly for lower raids like os and naxx 10. Usually for naxx 25 I would like someone to have killed that boss on 10 first - then the only tactics that need to be explained are what is different in 25 than 10. So you're both right, if the raid leader doesn't check beforehand, then he must be willing to tell tactics if people ask, but it's perfectly fine to want an achiev before you take someone too.
