I levelled my hunter completely solo, till outlands, where I was asked to PuG Ramps and BF, so I said sure why not.
I went in completely unprepared, no macros wearing all quest greens, you kwim.
I was so not used to running as a group on my hunter, I still had auto-shot on, I did put my pet growl to off and pet to passive.
Well, I messed up a few times, mistargeted and shot a mob that wasnt in the group the tank pulled, I forgot to send in pet a few times. Forgot hunter's mark. Meh, and I was running with some dk's and pallies who have amazing AOE abilities.
My dps, for the lack of a better word, sucked.
Now im in Northrend and finding myself avoiding the whole PvE as a group experience, even though I have read almost every guide out there on macros, and how to assist the tank's focus etc. Still really scared to run an instance and mess up again.
I know I will not learn by not breaking the ice, but is there any tricks or have you guys ever felt the same way after messing up?
I faced the same thing. And it took a while to learn how to play. Then came the big BM nerf, and I had to learn SV all over again. Honestly, I never use macros. And I still manage to pull 5.5K DPS on Patch. It just takes practice. And yes, I STILL screw up on occasion.

You can always use Volley on the pack of multiple mobs.
Actually less chance of screwing that up since you choose the target area and can clearly see where it's going to be. The damage is also quite good.

Wont that pull at least a mob or two though?
Unless you some how put your target area far off over a different mob I dont see how you could mess up a volley.

We've all been there at one point or another, whether it be our first toon in Deadmines or first time in TotC and we didn't do our homework. I leveled a Prot Pally as my first toon, not knowing a single thing about the class, I messed up plenty of times in Uldaman, Sunken Temple and I still mess up every now and then (switch specs and forget to turn on Righteous Fury due to not having mana, lose a mob and watch a dps die) but you gotta learn from yours & others mistakes and keep at it.

I dunno if this is what caused it, but you can turn off "auto attack next target" in the interface. I pulled a mob in Kara once when I didnt realize i had reset this somehow.
But if you realize you make a mistake, and admit it in chat, usually people are cool with it--if you deny it or dont even know you did it, then people are more likely (and justified) in calling you a fail
