for all you coding geniuses out there i pose this question:
Is it possible to type a line in html format code that allows for the linking of items much like shift-clicking in game which links to a mouse-over tooltip box or something similar? Specifically in the format of the which when clicked links u to wowhead / allakhazam / thottbot item pages? If its not possible in just html code would it be a flash or java addon and applicable to general forums and boards?
discuss.

Yes, but it requires more than just HTML, check out
this
for more information on what your looking for.
There is no way to do with just HTML, it might be possible with just HTML and CSS, but the link above simplifies everything.
Wrong section by the way.

It is possible with CSS using the :hover selector and some very well structured code. But doing it threw CSS and HTML alone allows for some bloat as you have to hard-code in any item you want to link.
Using JS/PHP it allows you to link to an XML file and pull the item's info on the fly, so no need to have anymore bload then what you want coded in.

noted, just wondered it be so cool if it was easy but whatever is? you think the gerbils that run the wowhead servers could crank out something for these forums that allow us to link directly items in threads?
get to it!

MySQL shouldn't be used for the information unless your storing each and every items stats on your own server which would defeat the point of using wowhead. XML is what's needed to pull the information form wowhead and display it on your page. PHP just makes thing more dynamic and open for changes fairly quick.

No... we'd want to use MySQL to cache the data so that we don't have to open Wowhead and grab/parse the data every time it's requested...
You can also use your own simple file-based caching system.

Granted this is what I have used everytime and seems to respond faster. To each his own I guess *shrug*

You can use MySQL but using a file based cache and including the files instead is MUCH faster and doesn't bog down your server near as much, I wrote my own which would snag items from alla, cache them and then display them, it would check to see if there was a cache, if it existed then it displayed it without hammering alla all the time.
Not only did it reduce MySQL load but kept me from being a general nuisance to alla.
Ya know these kind of things aren't that hard to code, I may just toss up my own recoded wowhead version somewhere.
