How to tell someone that their spec is bad?

As I said earlier. If someone tells me that my spec is bad, I click Ignore and continue enjoying the game. If someone wants to discuss my spec, I'll spend several hours in discussion and testing of various specs.
Really...
When someone tells me that my play style or talent choices are wrong, I have but one response for them. "Goodbye <click ignore".
How is that a form of discussion...
And once again, since you seemed to miss it:
Don't judge another without allowing yourself to be judged in return... Simple tenant to live by but amazing results....
By ignoring them from the start you’re not opening yourself to criticism. You are in fact only showing them, from their perspective, ignorance. I'm not saying your bad... but your choices are not good. Open discussion of a spec should be discussed not shut down you yourself feel this way but think your spec is the best for you, but to actively discuss something you need to stand back and let someone tell you what they think of your spec as well as the same for them. I will tell you my spec is best but I won't ignore you if you see something wrong in it. In fact I will openly discuss it...
And one last thought. You may be an awesome player but a non optimal spec is still not a "good spec". You could do so much more with an optimal spec. And as far as I know there is really no such thing as cookie cutter builds for Balance raid dps... Some tradeoffs but that does not change the fact that it is not a cookie cutter build. Outside of PvP itself you will very, very rarely see a cookie cutter build anymore.

No... The Op is looking for a way to reach method 2 without resorting to method 1.
I'm saying YOU ignoring method 1 is bad. It may be a bad conversation opener but if it results in a discusion then it's a win overall.
In addtion I said balance PvE is NOT a cookie cutter build at all, but with your thinking on how to spec it leaves it open to that possibility.

Thread title: How to tell someone that their spec is bad?
Original post consists of a URL to an armory and the question "Worst moonkin spec ever?"
I don't see as how he's attempting to find a way to reach a discussion. He's pointing out someone's spec as being horrible, plain and simple. And the thread title states clearly that he thinks the spec is bad and wants a way to tell the guy that it's horrible.
Sorry, I don't see it as an attempt to open discussion. Just another slam of someone in order to make the original poster feel more l33t. And if that's the case, I still feel my /Ignore comment to be relevant.
Take a look at the post right before you chimed into this little gem...

I saw the topic, I saw his first post. I did not read through the entire thread to see if he changed his tune later. The thread started as a "how do I tell someone that their spec is bad" with a trash attempt on the first post. Okay, he changed his tune later. My post was regarding his first post and the start of the thread.
Which means that your post was irrelevant to the current (at the time) conversation, if I'm understanding this right.
My response was "why do you need to tell someone their spec is bad?" If you want to be judgmental and tell someone that their decisions are bad, then I have no requirement to listen. If you wish to have a rational discussion where we both might benefit, then let's pour a beer and have a good talkfest!
People feel the need to be judgmental because of the fact that most of the WoW player base SUCKS ASS. Seeing another person who could potentially be one of those and telling them that is a simple way to open a conversation about it, if the person you're attempting to talk to isn't dumb and/or judgmental of you for being judgmental... but I digress. Back when I was still leveling, I had been terrible at the job I am today, (a tank) but thanks to someone coming out and telling me that my spec was bad, I ended up having a long discussion and also made a friend of one of the most competent people I've seen on the internet.
He reminded me of the fact that in groups, I WASN'T THE ONLY PERSON THERE, and that there were other people to consider there. This made me want to be the best I could be, so we could all get the most enjoyment (or the least pain) out of the instance or quest we were doing, and overall, be considered a good player by a decent amount of people. Although I agree that the talent spec does not make the player, it does give a pretty damn good guess of what they're like, and their level of competence.
Also, since you think that way, are you one of the people that on Diablo 2 would love playing all of the unorthodox character builds? Just a bit curious at this point.

There are people with wierd specs all over the place, and some of them do really good, sometimes even better than those with the more popularly accepted specs. Part of being a good player is knowing how your play style, gear, and skill meshes together.
It is your money and you can do whatever the heck you want with it--is a true statement, but as stated above in different wording, if people see you doing poorly and se how off kilter your spec is, then they might comment...and then try to discuss it. HOW they go about it is a totally different story. And thats what I understood UrCure meant.
Believe it or not...some people dont play as much WoW as you and dont spend a lot of time researching and that is just a problem everyone has to deal with in one way or another. I have run into people who have odd specs and do bad but what I do is say: "Hey you should check out so and so website because there are a lot of knowledgable (sp) people on your specific class." It's usually taken well.
And a final thought for those of you who are absolutely irritated by failbots...I lol@you. It is so much easier to drop a friendly comment and go about your business than to expend a lot of energy !@#$ing yourself off.
