One thing that you can do to make almost every part of the game more "successful" is to participate in the social aspect of the game.
Sure you can read the best strategies and grab the most profitable professions for the server you are on but unless your goal is to do everything solo then to me the best advice is to be social.
By social I do mean pleasantly asking on the zone /1 channel chat for help with a hard quest fight. Also volunteering to help with a request when you see it. Two or more people can do certain quest fights much easier then one alone no matter how good the solo player. People remember the kindness.
You might even get invited to join a guild and depending on the type of guild and the membership you may find more support then you would suspect. Long time players may know helpful short cuts. Others playing your class could explain uses of skills unsuspected. There may be organized instance runs. Players may have materials useful to your class or profession that they do not need and might gift it via the guild bank. After you play and level you might find the quiet satisfaction of helping a new person in the same way you have been helped with advice or a random mat gift that has accumulated in your bank.
A word about /2 Trade chat. If it is fun for you to participate in the flaming talks and the running jokes then its your type of fun. Please realize that there is a /ignore option and once used people will never see you asking for help or information or an instance group.

Basically experimenting with your abilities as you're leveling and putting time into researching your class, other classes, and other things like professions and instances is a great way to get better at the game. It will mostly be trial and error when you first start out. Hopefully by lvl 80 you've gained enough experience to have less trial and error moments.
For dungeons and raids it's always a smart idea to look at the map and boss encounters before going in.
