My guild uses Suicide Kings and has been for a long time. Basically your name goes on a list of say 40. As others "bid" on items they want they are "suicided, and your number goes up. Basically when a piece drops you want you bid to the loot master. If you win you receive the piece and your number goes back to 40.
Probably one of the most fair systems I've seen IMO.
say hello to going Ulduar once a month and get your piece every month.
One of the more unfair ones imo as even if you arent there and are contributing *!@# your chzanges to get gear increases if you win a piece during your raids.
DKP imo is the most simple version, you know who gets it when somthing drop, you hope for it to drop so you get it maybe next week. In most guilds who are semi decent, you need to EARN loot.
Our lootrules are like this.
Bosskills = +DKP.
Needrolls(mainspec) = -DKP.
Greedrolls(offspec) = 0.
That way, offspecs are quickly geared up.
A guild that wants me as back-up tank(warrior) shouldnt even try to let me pay DKP for my offspec.

Well, I prefer the simple rules (not really sure if they're DKP or not) basically, you roll and win an item, thats a point. Therefore, when you roll on another piece, if someone with less points than you is rolling, they get it, but still acquire the point. If nobody rolls on the loot at all, it then goes to off-spec rolls. Two different point systems, each seperate. If nobody rolls for off-spec, its then DEed. That way everything is nice and simple. Oh, and the points are reset after each full clear.
Also, we're a close guild, so this works very well. Not sure how it would work anywhere else. =P

That's not a fault in the system, though. It's someone using it in a way you (and, to be honest, I) don't agree with. But no where are there any universal rules for DKP which say 'you lose points for offspec items even if no one else wants them'. A guild leader can say offspec items will cost points or that they won't. I think offspec shouldn't cost DKP, especially if you get items because no one else wanted them, but if I hear about some guild leader somewhere that does take DKP for offspec items, it doesn't mean I will never use the system again and that I believe DKP is flawed, it means I don't agree with the way that particular person uses it, and would use it differently as a guild leader.

I remember my first MC raid, like 4 shaman pieces dropped, and the other shaman already had them all, so I collected them by default... and my DKP instantly went in the toilet by several hundred points. It took me months to get my DKP in the positive numbers again.
This is why I think the DKP system is very bad. Why can't someone get something for free if no one wants it? Instead of wasting in by converting it into yet another Abyss Crystal, why not give it to someone in the guild who needs it? Isn't it better for the guild to improve their guild and increase their chance to progress more, rather than arguing about how much DKP they need to pay back in debt?
This is why my guild does not use the DKP system. Guild Leader is the Master Looter and everyone rolls on basis of need. After getting one item/gear/trinket/wtv, you are on 2nd bid, meaning someone who did not get an item has higher priority over you.
This situation would vary from guild to guild, depending on the type of DKP system they're using.
In my guild, it acts as an auction. No offspec or mainspec bids, just bid the most and you win. If after 20 seconds no one has bidded, it is offered to anyone for free. If no one wants it, then it is turned into an Abyss.
And turning an epic into an Abyss isn't necessarily a waste, that will go to fuel the high end enchants in the game.

DKP should be dead by now, in my opinion. You're raiding with either 9 or 24 other people; I understood back in the day where you rolled against a possible 39 other people against an item and that was why DKP was invented, but seriously; give it a rest. Let's take a look at the group composition. In a 25 man group, you can usually find 3-5 tanks, 5-8 healers, and the rest DPS. We'll assume 4 tanks, 7 healers and then that leaves us fourteen DPS. Tanks have a 1/4 chance of winning loot before we take in the assumption that two of the tanks may be better geared; healers are divided into four categories - plate, cloth, mail and leather. I really, really don't feel I need to go further than this loot breakdown because I think you can see how DKP is such a dead and flawed system.

DKP in 10 mans is, I agree, pointless.
However, if you're running a 25 man guild, especially one with 100+ members...
Let's say there's a healer that always shows up to raid. 100% attendance, always there.
There's another healer, who is iffy, and doesn't always log on.
They're both in raid, a BiS slot drops for both of them.
Who should win it? The flake? Or the perfect attendance healer?
If you throw out DKP, you start neglecting your raiders who put effort into the guild, and in turn, they won't put as much effort in either.
If you have a 25 man guild with perfect attendance, and it's the same people every week, /roll works fine.

Ever heard of Gold DKP? When loot drops people bid on it using gold. Highest bidder wins (naturally) and the gold goes into the Pot. At the end of the raid the Pot gets divided evenly among all raid members.
The good thing about this system is that even if you get no loot you are almost certain to get some gold out of it.
