How exactly does DKP work?

Well, later tonight I'm running my first raid with my new guild, and they use DKP looting system. I have absolutely no idea how it works, could someone please explain it for me? Thanks to anyone who replies.

you get a certain amount of points for downing bosses and for staying in the raid. when you down a boss you bid on the item with your dkp and the highest bid wins. with you raiding for the first time you might not get any loot cause your not going to have a lot of dkp.

Oh, I can just ask them tonight now that I understand the basic principle.

My pre-BC raiding guild used a 0-sum DKP system where you accumulated points as mentioned above, but when an item dropped, the person with the highest amount of DKP automatically got it (if they put their name in the pot for it). Each item had a cost associated with it and that amount would be reduced from the winner's DKP total...
I remember my first MC raid, like 4 shaman pieces dropped, and the other shaman already had them all, so I collected them by default... and my DKP instantly went in the toilet by several hundred points. It took me months to get my DKP in the positive numbers again.
Just showing it as an example of the different methods of using DKP, like Fauxknight mentioned.

Which is sort of a downside to most DKP systems.
I prefer systems with two DKP values, one for tier and one for non-tier. That way, availability of getting a tier token or a nice trinket don't counteract one another.

Most non-crazy guilds disenchant things if no one wants them, instead of forcing you to take gear because you're the only one who can use it.

I think that system is known as 'suicide' DKP. The guild I am currently in uses a simplified version called LPS which works on the basis of hours of raiding divided by items taken. The player with the highest value takes the item by default should they so choose.
I found that I did not enjoy raiding as much when I was penalized for taking offspec items, or items that no one else wanted.

DKP is for people who are greedy, cannot get along without some sort of currency and have retarded guild leaders.
DKP is an excellent way to keep greed in check. Using /roll can often lead to more bickering, especially if someone wins a roll but loses the item to someone who may or may not need it more.
The system makes things more fair, since you get out of raiding what you put into it and there's no question whether or not a person has earned the right to a given item (with limits, of course; DKP should not just be a means of taking whatever you want from newer raiders).

Is there an addon that keeps track of that for guild leaders, or do they have a notebook next to their PC for scribbling in who killed what boss? It seems like there would have to be something that allowed you to keep tabs that.
There are lots of loot-tracker addons out there, most with the ability to write notes. Makes it easy to add a message like "Gnubigena, 20 dkp" when I win an item. Can't really remember any on the top of my head, but yeah... Should be easy to find :)

EPGP, which is somewhat similar to DKP keeps track of EP and GP as numbers in officer notes, and guild masters set up the permissions so everyone can see but no one can touch officer notes. The downside of this of course is that you don't have officer notes.

Well the way DKP works is first you need a butthole guild leader. Then his commanding officer needs to be an elitist twat who's so arrogant he has a golden dildo sticking out of his anus at all times.
Second, your raid leaders MUST and I cannot stress this enough MUST be complete and utter failures in real life. They need to have a commanding voice, swear in a foreign language when a minuscule thing goes wrong and shout through ventrilo.
DKP is for people who are greedy, cannot get along without some sort of currency and have retarded guild leaders.
/roll is fair, it's always been fair and if you have a GM with half of a brain then he/she will know that "OH HEY THAT GUY HAS GOTTEN SOMETHING ALREADY WHILE THIS GUY WHO HAS BEEN TO 3 RAIDS WITH US HAS GOTTEN NOTHING, ILL GIVE IT TO THE LATTER GUY"
I disdain DKP.
Bitter much? You're confusing Guild abuse and @#$%^&* leadership with the DKP system. Don't fault an entire system just because some guild you didn't like used it.
DKP awards attendance, gives geared people a reason to continue raiding lower content, and is the fairest method of loot distribution.

Agreed. Nobody in the raiding guild should be stupid enough to bid on an item that has +1 more ap than his own when you have a new member in the raid who would get a major upgrade from that item. Also, we use main-spec > off-spec (I think others use that too) so that off-spec bids are starting only after nobody needs it for main spec.

Our lootrules are like this.
Bosskills = +DKP.
Needrolls(mainspec) = -DKP.
Greedrolls(offspec) = 0.
That way, offspecs are quickly geared up.
