First thing that I would really recommend doing is getting used to using keybindings to heal rather than manually clicking on spells with your mouse. If you don't have keybindings set for your action bars already, you can do so from the options menu. Generally, you want your main action bar set up to use 1-0, - and = in order.
Selecting players by clicking on them, and then just hitting a number key to heal them rather than having to move the mouse again and click on a spell will really help your reaction times. This goes for PvE as well as PvP.
I think that keybindings will help you more than anything, but I can think of a few other things that wouldn't hurt to try either. By default, hitting "Tab" targets nearby enemies. There is also a keybinding you can set to automatically target nearby friendly units. I'm not sure what it is by default, but I changed mine to "t". This is also something you can do from the keybinding menu. Basically, if you're standing in a group of friendly players, you can hit this key to randomly select different people. If they need a heal, heal them. If they don't, hit the key again and look for someone who does.
You can also try to set up a range check for your party/raid frames. I'm pretty sure that's something you can do with Grid. Basically, if someone is out of range to be healed, their frame will be dimmed/grayed out. That way you know you don't need to bother trying to heal them, because they're not near you. This is a very handy thing to have in PvP. It also becomes useful in raiding situations, but not so much in 5-mans because people tend to stick together anyway.
Hope that helps some, good luck.

Glad to have you on board with us in World of Warcraft.
First off, the battlegrounds are going to be very different at the lower levels than at the cap. Espcially at the bottom of a bracket, the twinks in the BGs are just going to tear you up. That can really cause frustration, especially if someone compounds that by bringing your ability to heal into question. The best thing to do in that situation is just calmly explain what was keeping you from healing, "I'm sorry, , but I seemed to hit a snag back there when the 2 shamans frost shocked me and a warrior came up behind me with a twink weapon and began mortal sriking me for xxxx while you continued running out of my range." A good way to ease the inevitable frustration is to just take a break from the battlegrounds and hammer out a few levels, then go back at a higher point in the bracket.
But after playing a priest for so long, and leveling so wrong the first time, my only advice to you would be to respec
shadow
right now (
especially
since you're 40). I can understand that you may feel that it takes away from your "healer" identity, and I can wholeheartedly sympathize, as I feel the same way, I love healing too. It's very different in World of Warcraft, though. The game really does start at 70. With the patch coming out today that will
significantly
increase leveling speed, you'd be able to rocket through 40-70, then you could go back to getting some pvp gear and healing in battlegrounds (or groups/raids) as you are now. Just take it on faith from me, the benefit you get from leveling as holy is not worth missing out on the speed of experience gain that you will find as shadow. A whole new world of opportunity for healing awaits at 70.
TL;DR version: Don't lose your cool over pvp. Spec shadow, level. Heal at 70. You won't regret it.
P.S.: Could you post a link to your armory or talent build? I'd be glad to give you some tips on how to spec and gear if you truly want to continue healing on your way to 70.

THIS is the kind of feeback that make forums awesome. Thank you for taking the time to write an OUTSTANDING response.
I'm always glad to help. I've had college finals bear down on me recently, but I try to check the forums (especially the priest forum) as often as possible. It brings me great joy to be able to help anyone when it's needed.
Feel free to ask anything or send me an e-mail if you have any further questions.

Hi there. I sympathize with your pvp problems. I find pvping on my priest to be extremely frustrating sometimes, but there's times where I can make or break a fight because of my healing, and that's very rewarding.
The other suggestions will help you a lot. Once you get used to keybindings you'll wonder how you got along without them. Speccing shadow is also a good suggestion. I was shadow from 1-60 and bounced back and forth from holy to shadow from there on out. You will heal instances just fine as shadow, I promise. Holy improves healing abilities quite a bit, but it just isn't necessary to heal five man stuff.
Shadow gives you more survivability (shorter cooldown on fear, silence, and a flat damage reduction (15% reduction to physical damage in shadowform) and it's damn fun to boot. You can still heal if the situation warrants it.
The only thing I can add is this. Healing in battlegrounds requires a thick skin. People will ALWAYS complain, why didn't you heal me, buff me, wtf where were the heals, etc., all the while you have two rogues surgically attached to your backside and no one is helping you. It's just the nature of the battlegrounds when you're a healer. That, and always being focused fired.
I have a Gawd-I'm-sick-of-being-the-whipping-boy pvp character that I play (feral druid) when I get too irritated with playing my priest. Just remember you are there to have fun, not just to facilitate the fun of other people. Spec shadow and melt faces if you want to, or stay holy and keep the team alive.
I wish you all the luck!
