I never put beacon on the tank....why? Because the tank is the person who should be receiving most of the incoming damage, accordingly my heals will be focused on him primarily. If a dps receives damage, it could be that they were standing in the wrong place, they pulled aggro by going all out or some combination of the two, or perhaps there was a fluke and the tank couldn't pull aggro off of them for some reason.
This is the exact reason why the tank should be beaconed in most cases. If another player takes damage, you don't have to stop healing the tank to heal them.
Since beacon also gives you overhealing on the beacon now, there is no question that the best target for beacon in five mans is the tank. Again, it isn't necessary. In point of fact I never ever bother with beacon in five mans. It's rarely needed, especially once you get some nice raid gear. But now that you could (in theory) HL spam a DPS with 0 damage and heal your tank for the full heal there is no reason not to get that extra bit of health on your tank any time you heal anything ever.

For 5 mans, I prefer to put bacon on the off-tank or dps and heal the tank as needed.
OT? In a 5 man?
Ideally, the tank is the only one who is going to be taking consistent damage, except for a few gimick fights.
Putting beacon on the tank and healing anyone else who takes damage makes more sense than putting beacon on someone who is taking damage in addition to the tank. This way, you will never worry about the tank not receiving heals. The tank will always be your first priority in a 5 man, and putting beacon on him assures that he always has a heal coming.
You can state your case all you want about how telling someone to do this makes them think that its the only way to do it and then they never try anything else. That is only true for bad players.
The first time I healed heroic Nexus, we wiped on the last boss because I had trouble healing everyone while moving to keep the debuff off me. The second time we tried, I beaconed myself and healed everyone else. No worries at all and we downed the boss easily.
Smart players will learn and adapt to the situation at hand.
OT -- My bad, I meant melee dps.
Not sure where this hostility is coming from. You proved my point about not beaconing the tank with your anecdote regarding your Nexus adventure.

If a dps receives damage, it could be that they were standing in the wrong place, they pulled aggro by going all out or some combination of the two, or perhaps there was a fluke and the tank couldn't pull aggro off of them for some reason. The tank is my primary focus, the other members of the group are secondary but still important. Of course keeping yourself up is also important but that comes with situational awareness and being able to move at a moment's notice.
Somehow this thread went from providing suggestions to the OP to a critique of my methods.
Like I said earlier, very interesting.
The problem with this style of beaconing is thus:
DPS 1 has beacon
Tank is taking regular damage.
You heal tank.
Dummy dps 1 standing in fire is ok.
Boss decides that blasting you sounds fun.
You heal you.
Tank still takes damage... but is now getting no heals.
The ONLY proper way to use beacon in a 5-man is to beacon the tank. (or yourself if you want to ensure you live through massive aoe to keep healing... although id still say beacon tank and heal yourself.)
Anything else is foolish. (i understand overgearing makes none of this meaningful... but thats not the point now is it?)
