There are a lot of nice talents at the top of both of these trees but besides penance are they necessary? I was thinking of trying some thing like
this

Ok, I'm sure you'll get enough people telling you hybrid builds don't work, so I'll refrain from saying that. However, keeping your build, there are some much needed changes you need to make.
Move your tps from
SR
and put them in
Imp IF
. With the changes to aggro, if your having aggro problems healing, it's the tanks fault. 54 more sp is much, much better.
Take out your
SoR
glyph. SoR is only good when you die...which isn't the goal

i am mostly 1st or 2nd spot on the 10 man raiding list
If a 10 man requires more than 2-3 healers, it's a fail group to begin with. If you care about placement on a healing meter, go for 25 mans where you usually have 7-8 healers. And note that disc should never top healing meters (unless your adding in absorption pts).
I tried to make a build with deep holy talents, but i feel that this wasnt reflecting the way i play so after 20 respecs i feel comfortable now. SoL, ToF, serendipity and inspiration doesnt work for me. i dont want to spam flash heals to get haste and i doent want to do a flash heal just becos its free. i dont want to concentrate on looking if crits proc, thats not my style. ive been playing with these talents but i only liked SoL.
Basically your saying you don't like the complexities of a holy priest, but prefer the ability to raid heal?
I think the strengt of a hybrid role lies in the fact that if there is a tank healer and a raid healer already you can fill in the gap to assist both healers in their specific role. And the build is suited for 5 man heroics.
If that's your reason for getting a hybrid build...then don't go for it. Disc is great for tank healing and good for raid healing; holy is great for raid healing and good for tank healing. With your hybrid build, your only slightly better than "good" for both rolls.

My feelings on hybrid are this, blizzard has never really endorsed it because only one class, you guessed it, priests are even close to do doing it. Shamans have one tree to heal, druid have one tree to heal, paladins have 3/4 of a tree to heal, and for some reason priests have two...now would it be a huge change to instead make the disc tree float more towards a alt dps tree, or maybe a tanking tree (which would be hilarious to me) yeah, but my point is that the reason why these healing hybrids probably arent working is because well, blizzard doesnt really want them to. And then the other question is, for those warlocks, DKs, Mages, and Hunters, do they have viable and good hybrids at the end game?
P.S. I Suspect that the talents that seem to want to work off of other trees are really there for lvling purposes rather than raid utility

If you notice, many core talents that complement another build are placed towards the top of a tree (this goes for all classes). Blizz wouldn't even conceive of pushing Meditation beyond the reach of a normal holy/shadow build. Nor would Inspiration go beyond what a normal disc build produces. This is b/c while Blizz wants trees to complement each other, ultimately, disc complements disc better than any other tree, holy to holy, and shadow to shadow.

How good is GS?
It --->Prevents Death<---- with GS on, no matter how hard that mob hits that one time, the tank just won't die. (that one time, that is)
GS is awesomely OP. I prefer disc, but my 40% damage reduction from PS is sitting in the corner eating brownies and sneering angrily.
I don't heal as holy anymore, but when I first dinged 80, I did. I found the preventing death part pretty useful. Give it to a tank, heal the stupid dps, and marvel when the tank magically doesn't die.

Shamans used to have really decent Hybrid specs, like DWCH (Dual Wield Chain Heal) and Elem/Resto for mad regen...
Druids used to have a pretty decent Balance/Resto hybrid healing build (forgot it's name), with mad regen too...
But when you decide to go Hybrid, you accept to sacrifice your "best" potential abilities to get a little more utility...
Oh, and about...
now would it be a huge change to instead make the disc tree float more towards a alt dps tree
...haven't you ever heard of LOLsmite builds? A good holy/disc hybrid used to be able to dish insane amount of damages, superior to Shadow specs, at some point, and that's obviously not what Blizzard intended, so they nerfed it big time, and it's better that way too. If you want to do DPS, go Shadow, if you want to heal, go Disco, if you want to die, go Holy, that's how PvP specs go for Priests nowadays.
I love how every one of your examples was put into the past tense. My apologies however, I only really jumped into the game right around WotLK, and so was not around for the glory days of hybrid builds.
