High Damage... yet sub par DPS

I was curious to know if anyone else was experiencing this problem?
I ran quite a few heroics and raids over the weekend and currently am spec Meta and FG/Ember.
For Meta, I have Glyph of Life Tap, Meta and Incinerate. What I've been doing is popping Meta and my Mark of War Prisoner Trinket whenever the 2min cooldown for both is up. My rotation has been CoA, Corr, Immo, Shadow Bolt for 5% crit debuff and then Incin Spam, when under 35%, begin Soul Fire Weaving.
I feel that I am decently geared, yet in Heroics I could barely hit 2500 dps, more like 2000-2300 overall DPS. I was running with another Mage mostly and his DPS was 2500-2900 overall. Now the big difference between us was damage. I was pulling significantly higher amount of damage numbers than he was. Prior to the patch we were fairly on par in both DPS and damage, yet now I'm doing crazy high damage yet DPS is kinda meh. The same rang true when I was running Naxx 10 and 25. In the 25 man I was 2nd in damage yet only 5-7th in DPS. This seems like a huge difference to me, and both WWS and Recount were reporting the same thing.
So again, my question is, have other Warlocks been noticing this trend? Is it perhaps my spec, glyphs, rotation? Or does this mean going forward that Warlocks will top Damage Charts vs. DPS charts? Which is more important?

Sustained and stable DPS is by far better.
I'd have to say its your spec that is causing you to have high damage but lower DPS - from what I've read Demonology is about popping cooldowns and having that burst damage during that time. Although this is just speculation from what I've read - I haven't tested Demon out yet.
If you're looking for good, solid, stable DPS - go
Affliction.
If you're looking for good DPS and some big yellow numbers, go
Destruction
That destro build can be tweaked, I just whipped it up real fast.

Yeah, I am going to go Affliction for my 2nd spec, I wasn't hit capped before the weekend but got some nice items to do Affliction.
I'm not too concerned or QQ'ing about my dps, I do like demo/meta, it's fun and ultimately that's what WoW should be about. My spec helps the raid, so I don't mind. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this trend, but I guess it's more a meta/demo thing.

Same here, always in top 3 overall damage, but fall behind in dps
What spec have you been using? I want to get more of an idea if it's just the spec or if it's some weird patch business.

I have been doing farely well with not doing that, I installed DoTimer and have worked the rotation out well enough that I life tap in between those small gaps when you don't have enough time to get off another Incinerate but you need that last dot to tick and it feels very fluid. But I dunno, still not as high DPS as one would expect.

May I recommend
EventHorizon
instead of DoTimer?
It have a very nice graphical layout (which shows you when to start casting to avoiding clipping) and has improved my DPS significantly when Afflicting.

good damage... bad dps...?
who cares?
dps is just a number. it's good to be able to churn out high dps on demand but the amount of damage you do on bosses is the important factor.

This is true, but again, I was just wondering if this was a common trend for the Meta spec that other Warlocks were noticing or if I was just plain doing something wrong.

First of all, why are you using Incinerate when you're speced Meta/Ruin? As Meta/Ruin you want to spam Shadowbolt rather than Incinerate. Do that and you'll probably see a huge DPS increase.
That could be my problem. If that's the case, I should probably put less points in Molten Core and re-Glyph. I shall test this out today and see how it pans out.
Thanks for the advice :-)

Your wowarmory is saying that you're using the right glyphs for each respective spec. I'm not sure why you said you were using the Incinerate glyph for your Meta spec, cus that's not what your armory says. According to your armory, your specs are fine. Keep molten core for both specs. Just fix your rotation.
As Meta/Ruin:
Life Tap, Pop Meta, Immo Aura, Curse of Doom, Immolate, Shadow Bolt Spam until Meta is over, then reapply Immolate along with Corruption (to proc Molten Core), then Shadow Bolt spam again until you need to reapply dots. Life Tap before every Meta and Curse of Doom. Pop Meta every time it's off of cooldown. Make sure you're in melee range of the boss so that it gets hit by your Immolation Aura.
I haven't had a chance to spec into Felguard/Emberstorm yet, but this is what I'm assuming is the correct rotation:
Curse of Agony (for Molten Core procs), Immolate, Incinerate Spam. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Ya I don't know why I said I was using Incinerate lol... I got confused, for a moment. Too many specs and Glyphs running through my head :p
I'm going to end up going FG/Ember for trash pulls and Affliction for bosses. Seems like the best route for high dps and damage.
Actually, there's a problem in your 41/30 spec. Take the points out of Imp. Shadow Bolt and put them into 2/2 Intensity and 3/3 Backlash for the increased crit.
If you put those points there, then you either miss out on Improved Immo or less points in Ember. Which is the better choice? I always thought FG/Ember required Improved Immo?
