I didn't see a salute at the end
He pushed him onto an
airmat
!
Supposedly, the would-be jumper fractured his right hand from the fall since the airmat wasn't blown up completely
He had already held up traffic for 5 hours
I say hero.

The person was going to jump anyway (probably), he just sped it up. So he isn't a villain.
But there's no reason he should be called a hero.

Not heroic, but is it any worse than the PC'ness that says that the police can't do the same thing? (Assuming the airmat was fully inflated)

The assumption is that there is a good chance that the person is up there because he is mentally unstable, not because he directly intends to cause the public inconvenience. So no, I don't call it PC'ness, I call it the police doing their job as it should be done.

No, the police should be apprehending the guy and getting him to help. Not leaving him out to cause public mayhem. Otherwise you might as well let every psychopathic person (from a psychological perspective, not colloquial) shatter windows abuse people on the street, and just stand back and watch, because he's just mentally unstable, not because he directly intends to cause public damage/inconvenience.
The police are there to minimise the public inconvenience, and to let the judicial process determine whether he directly intended to cause the disturbance, or whether he can rely on mental illness as a defence.

They aren't "leaving him out to cause public mayhem." A controlled environment is put up around the person. All aggressive behavior will do is increase the chance of the person doing something rash.
No one is advocating that the police stand back and watch. But at the same time I'm not advocating they push him off either.

Mmm, I beg to differ. The controlled environment is at the expense of the rest of the public. If all you're doing is talking to the guy for 5 hours, without making any other effort to fix the situation, then they're not actually helping the situation.
Again, what they should be doing is apprehending him and reducing the public impact. If he jumps, then he's safe, because you've put the countermeasures in place to stop him from hurting himself. If he walks with you, then so much the better. Either way, you've dealt with the situation in a suitable manner.
The idea of the 'softly softly' approach is extremely PC-oriented and doesn't actually help. He's going to come down one way or another. If you've got the air mat out and it's safe to jump, why waste any more time?
