Both Mining and Herbalism give EXP when gathering. Archeology does as well. Great way to level alts while supporting main characters with a bit a gold.
Cheers,

Herbing, Mining, and Archaeology give double XP while rested (but it works like monster kills where you can Herb/Mine/Archy your way to purple XP, not like quests, which push the bar)
I took my 81 mage to 83 just by going from Archaeology 1 to 350. With the mage being able to teleport around, they do archaeology quite fast. Need to get down to Tanaris? Tele to Org/SW and take the uldum port. Middle of the EK? Either Twilight Highlands portal, or Blasted Lands portal. Troll stuff in Stranglethorn if you're horde? Blasted Lands.

I actually love this whole XP from gathering and hope they don't nerf it. Having to level a toon whose professions weren't max used to be nothing more than a grind. Sure, you could make some money based on your servers economy but that didn't usually make me feel better. Now if I were to gain a few levels while leveling, that's something different. :)
Also, for those that didn't know it already, you don't get XP based on the herb you are gathering, meaning it can be a gray herb (no skill-ups from gathering it) but you can still get XP from it. I think the amount of XP is based on what your level is and what zone the herb is gathered from, but that's just a guess. I'd be interested to know if someone has mapped out the XP gains and how they relate to character level/zone/herb.

This is all very true. I have a healer who's 84.5 right now, and 90% of the XP post 80 has come from archaeology, with just the odd dungeon run and the initial twilight quests to get access to vendors.
The only problem is, if you plan on
playing
that character at max level you'll have no starter gear from quest rewards, and no useful rep, so you better have a plan B! Lots of gold + access to crafting professions works well enough though.
Does anyone know if heirlooms & guild perks add to profession/gathering XP?

farajihal, thanks for the info on leveling 30-40, I am getting to that range with one of my newer toons and don't feel like questing much.
edit: grammar!

There are zones that are absolutely insane for herbing. Felwood is one I remember in particular. There were just obscene amounts of herbs.. I actually quested through it, but probably half my experience came just from gathering herbs that were in my questing path. ( I didn´t farm, just gathered what pop up on my map). The ´norm´was always having 2 or 3 yellow dots on the minimap at a time.

I wanted to post an anomaly that others have possibly seen.
I was questing in Howling Fjord and all out of rested. Pretty much every mob I was killing was giving me between 1,000 and 1,200 experience. I gathered a Goldclover and gained 2,100 experience!
I have no idea what could have accounted for the nearly double XP from this node. I gathered a few more Goldclover and only got between 1,300 and 1,400 experience. Has anyone else seen strange experience gains like this?

it was Critical gain :P
You know I can laugh at that but I really thought the same thing. :) Also, I got a Frost Lotus on that gather so I don't know if that is a factor?
