lifebloom, rejuvination, wild growth(6 min CD) at instant speed, as well as regrowth at 2 sec account for druid hots, while we have renew......oh and glyph effect of PoH if you are like that. so reliably three different hots that a druid can cast on a person to get their health up quickly regardless of their other
direct
healing
options
. so yeah, i am willing to bet that druids will be better than priests at hot style healing, simply because they can get very fast healing over time.
now in 5 mans, oh yeah renew for accidentally damaged dps. 10 mans, i try a glyphed shield (raising the bar to let other healers know that he is being healed, or at least they recognize that they are bubbled and some else can take a heal) as well as a renew to tick underneath it, now get into 25 mans....okay thats either when only FH, PW:S, or other more direct spell should be used.....
special circumstance is a very well organized guild raid that has worked together often enough to that the healers will "trust" each other to cover their groups, or however the healing duty is divyed up. more communication=less sniping=less overhealing
now as to the OP and the actual topic of this thread, everyone after megavolt i thought got it right :)

The number of spells isn't really relevant. A Druid can - just like a Priest - only cast one spell a second due to the gcd cap. Even if Druids had a million different spells it wouldn't matter - the best one with cooldown is cast when it's available and in between the best one without cooldown is spammed as filler.
To maximize hps as a Druid that means Wild Growth on cooldown and Rejuvenation spam in between. Regrowth and Lifebloom won't be touched.
For a Priest it's similar: CoH + PoM on cooldown, Renew spam in between. The Druid will most likely produce higher hps. At least I haven't seen a Priest that could out-heal me on my Druid (in a fight that's very heavy on raid damage) yet, I tend to get around 10k hps on Twin Valks or Iron Council HM when I'm slacking and I peak at over 12k hps. But I've seen our holy Priests in the raid to be very successful and pushing over 8k hps with massive Renew spam (and CoH / PoM being the next best spells in healing done). Renew is the only way a Priest can hope to compete in fights that have steady raid wide damage, direct heals simply can't even come close to producing the numbers needed to top meters. And when doing hard modes this amount of healing simply is needed, there is no way around it. I'd even suggest Lightwell use in those fights, at least for the melee (with the Lightwell a Priest could maybe even catch up to Druid healing, we haven't tried that yet).

Yes, and while you overheal 60% of the time, priests are owning with instant heals, grats on your 12k

Err that was 12k effective healing. Overheal was 16%, giving an overall raw healing output of close to 14k. I'm not quite sure how it is for Priests but at least for Druids having 14k average hps over a fight isn't really hard. With mostly t9 gear and raid buffs Rejuvenation will heal for around 16k total (at a 1s gcd, meaning a theoretical maximum of 16k hps) and Wild Growth will easily do >20k hps on average.
Renew and CoH alone can't quite produce these numbers but I think PoM should be able to make up for it. I'd be interested in those numbers if any raiding Priest can provide them.
There are simply fights in which people are rarely ever topped off. In such a situation there is simply no way to beat a HoT (no matter if it is Rejuvenation or Renew).

if your trying to mimic a druids play style then you dont want to glyph renew. you want it to tick longer for you to be able to cast more renews during the duration.
