Having trouble staying interested in my mage.

Hey guys. I have a level 42 mage and i have bought all the heirloom gear for it. The problem is that i just cant stay interested in it for more than 5 mins, and i just dont want to play it. I love casters, i have a boomkin, warlock, shadow priest, but i just cant stay interested in my mage. It seems like i kill stuff too slow and die too fast. I can use the shields, sure, but im oom after every fight which is annoying, and my conjured water wont fill all my mana, so i end up drinking two.
Basically theres just a load of downtime, i die too fast, and i kill too slow. Is it always like this until 80? Maybe you can give suggestions.. as i really dont know how to properly play a mage.

You say that you use shields so I assume you are frost:
-As frost you shouldn't be dying too much. Shatter crits will make things faster along with Fingers of Frost (45-46).
-There was a reason why Blizzard gave mages the ability to conjure water: you use a lot of mana!
-Don't use mana shield. You will go oom a lot faster. The only time you need to use it is if you are about to die. Use frost nova and Cone of Cold before Mana shield. Shattered Barrier is useful, too, and you can get that now.
If you are losing interest, try switching specs or just stop playing the mage for a while. It's okay to take a break.

Unfortunately with your spec, the OP cannot use Icy Veins. (oops!) I would suggest
this
if issues with dying are your biggest concern.
If you are more concerned with mana:
this
would be okay.
Choose what you think would be good. You will have to drink no matter what...sorry. You will probably die some more. It happens.
Do you want to drink less? Have greater distance between mobs and yourself? Slow the mob even more? Decrease the time between when you can use your emergency buttons (Ice Block, Frost Nova, etc)? It's all up to you.

This is quite the other direction than what the others are saying but....
If your mage doesn't interest you, why "force" yourself to love it? When you find what you enjoy, play that.
Just cause you're fond of casters doesn't mean they're all for you. I love my mage and LOATHE my warlock.

QFT..
if you have to force yourself to like your mage, it may not be the class for you.. try taking a break from it for a week or two, adn come back to it and see if you still dislike it..
if nothing else... the extra rested XP is nothing to sneeze at.

Mage isn't for everyone. I'll even admit that during my time playing I've benched my Mage on more than one occasion. Something keeps bringing me back though.
For me, TBC killed Mages off. I played a Elemental Shaman who raped the DMG Meters and loved it.
With WoTLK and the "Hybrid DPS lower than Pure DPS" rule, I decided to try Mage again and haven't looked back. While personally I fell that Mage could use some love from Blizzard, we're in a pretty good place right now. Not perfect, but far from being put aside like with Sunwell.
As for advice, I would always recommend going Frost for Leveling, Soloing and Heroics. While you can use other specs, Frost just makes things much easier.

In that levels, and with that heirlooms you should be AoE-ing to level, grab a "kill sum mobs" quests and aoe'em down. It makes me feel great to complete a quest y 1-2 pulls :P

i levelled as a fire mage 1-80. by the time a mob reached me, it was in ashes :p
i understand everyone giving you tips as frost, but honestly, why not
try a different spec
?
i personally hated the frost and arcane specs when i tried them out.
if that doesn't help, along with everyone elses tips, then see the quote box :p

Oh yeah! ;o Forgot about that.
When I was doing 70 to 80 my friend told me to try fire, frostfire, arcane. I hated them all but it may not be so bad at lower levels.
For Arcane, maybe something like this:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#ocbVf0bhzLGh
but I wouldn't really know all that much. What I see in this spec is Clearcasting and 30% more crit chance whenever you gain it. Arcane doesn't get Arcane Blast until level 64 so that really sucks bad. It just looks like you'll be using Arcane Missiles as this spec for a looong time. D:
If I were fire I would probably use this:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#oZbgcbohIuV
and move into Pyromaniac as I gain levels. Pyroblast would be a strong opener but 5 seconds for a cast is pretty sucky. At levle 80 pyroblast seems to crit for less than Fireball but maybe at lower levels it will be much stronger and worth it. It's DoT is also very strong so it'll be worth it.
as for the fire spec, pyroblast comes into play once u max out
hot streak
.
hot streak procs are fantastic ^_~

If your having trouble keeping interest in your mage, mostly due to boredom. I suggest you do some frost AoE grinding. Unfortunately mages are squishy as heck and you must understand that in order to play and level to the challenge of Frost AoE. Let me tell you, there is NOTHING more satisfying than gathering 6-10 pirates in Tanaris and killing them all with two blizzards. This isn't recommend for the inexperienced or faint of heat.

As to the "love casters, why not mage?" I don't know. I like mages and shadowpriests and can't stand warlocks.
It's wierd, I like Mage. It's been my main class for pretty much the entire time I've played. While it does really annoy me at times (usually while being beaten on the Damage Meters due to RNG hating me) there is something about Mage that keeps me playing instead of rerolling.
I loved Affliction Warlock in TBC. I even love Elemental Shaman.
But Boomkin and Shadow Priest leave me cold. I just don't understand the appeal.

boomkins are friggin machine guns with their (seemingly) half a second wrath's...
shadow priests have
misery
, and
vampiric touch
. any class that gives replenishment to the raid is worth it to me... hunters aren't anywhere near as common as they used to be, and ret pallies are.... well.... ret pallies.. heh
