Guild Chat

Hi all
I thought i would try and get an general idea of people's ideas of acceptable guild chat in WoW.
I am in a pretty popular guild, with lots of high level players, who raid on a pretty much daily basis. That said, it isn't a hugely serious guild, and most people take the game with a pinch of salt.
Recently though, i have found myself being slightly irked by the content of the guild chat.
I am just interested to hear what people's views are here. Should people be free to talk about whatever they like? Air their dirty laundry so to speak? Bicker and fight? Spam pointless comments and begs for boosts?
Or should there be a level of etiquette in respect for the other guild members?
If anyone has any examples of good/bad experiences of guild chats, i'd also be interested to hear them.
:)

I'm in a guild that consists of mostly (literally) retired/former sailors and ex-military. We're very intent on PvP and anything goes in guild chat. We generally try to make people who join the guild aware of this before we ever /ginvite that we all have thick skins and a guild policy of 'break you down to build you back up'.

It's really a guild-by-guild basis. Guilds composed of people in their teens and early 20s have a different acceptability level than guilds full of 40s and 50s.
Personally, my guild is mostly young adults and older teens and there's very little that can't be said in guild chat. We rip on each other, but never in a serious manner. However, I'm a firm believer that any drama between two guild members is their business, not the guilds, and that it should be handled in /t's.

I personally think that good manners apply in
any
situation. For instance, if you have a beef with someone, it should be aired in private directly with that person, not in a public forum.
In the few large guilds I've been in, I've found that a lot of folks are "drama llamas" and get as much of a kick out of making a spectacle as they do playing the game. I'm afraid it's the nature of the Internet beast - something about having that layer of e-nonymity makes people act in ways that would get them slapped by their mom.
Now, to be fair, I also belong to a guild that we made specifically because a lot of the other guilds we belonged to had "PG-13" chat restrictions before 9:00 p.m. I'm of the mind that it's not my job to babysit someone else's kids, so if you don't want your child reading foul language then don't have them on your lap while you're reading guild chat... However, I
always
honor politely-worded requests if someone takes offense at something I say, even in guild.

I love that, 'drama llamas'!
The example that come to mind was earlier in the week, someone was continuously going on and on about how badly they were treated by their ex girlfriend. At first, people lent a sympathetic ear, but after a good 45 minutes of what was basically a monologue of this guys woes, he starts to say things like 'I told her if she talks to me again, im gonna smash her face in' or words to that effect. This was responded to in the guild by some people saying he shouldnt make comments like that, and others agreeing with him.
This kind of bothered me. I try not to make an issue of being female on this game. I appreciate it has a male majority (well, the server i play on does anyway) and i dont see the point of making much of a distinction based on my sex, but i did find myself taking offense to this. I dont condone violence to others, and i dont think it acceptable to make comments like this really. Nobody really stood up to him and the conversation soon gravitated to where people were saying its totally acceptable to 'give a girl a new face if they break your heart' etc.
Perhaps I'm being over-sensitive, but i just think there's a time and a place for moaning. I like to have WoW as a form of entertainment where im going to enjoy myself, not have to play as agony aunt to people like that.

I've been in some graphic guilds, and I've been in some strict guilds, and the end result is, it's not about what you say, but how/where you say it. You can have a perfectly fine conversation talking about the anatomy of a women, or a totally vulgar conversation talking about a girl's pu##y. <===Point proven.
