Hey, I have a simple question for you all. When you walk around World of Warcraft through it's various cities and lands you may encounter a friend/enemy like, "æther". Why am I asking my question if this may be common? I have heard that those people, who have special characters in their name, have been asked to change their name by a Game Master or something similar. If this is not allowed in character names, it must not be allowed in guild names, correct?

Blizzard's ToS is enforced
re
actively, not
pro
actively.
In other words: if someone breaks the ToS, there is no robotic "cop", as much as we'd like it, to put the smack-down on them. Players must report other players. If you have a name with a 'funky' character and someone doesn't like it, then reports it, you
may
have to change it.

Those characters are allowed in Guild and Pet names, but not player names. Why, I'm not really sure. But thats how Bliz does it.

My guess is that it makes it far more difficult to /ignore, /invite, /whisper players with strange characters in the name; there aren't really instances where you would need to type a Guild name or Pet name in a slash command.

I have a special letter in my name and nobody has ever complained about it... Really, it would be easy enough to block them from use when you first create the character if they really didn't like people using them. Blizz's policies can be a little odd sometimes.
